I’ve visited Cape Breton Island many times, and ridden past this iconic restaurant. I’d always wondered at the number of cars around it, and one year opted to drop in and try their famous deep fried chicken.
It was fantastic! The Colonel could learn some tips from these folks! I’ve made it my habit to stop in and buy a bit of chicken with crinkle cut fries and their brown gravy.
I’ve been told that I have to try an ice cream drumstick from across the road at the companion dairy bar, but sadly I didn’t have room this year.
My girlfriend got to experience it as well, and can now sit at the table with her brother Andrew who knows all about the restaurant, but has never stopped himself to sample their wares.
I liked it so much I bought a hat. :)
Update: 2020-08-01 My girlfriend and I got to visit again on our way through Bra d'OR, and this time there was a wee agenda, to try one of the Drumsticks that had been recommended by a girl who had grown up in Baddeck, and of course, to have more of that wonderful chicken!
We had to share the drumstick, and I was glad we did as it is enormous, and oh, so good! And this trip we sampled their chicken burgers which are made from solid boneless chicken breast with their lovely coating and served on a fresh kaiser roll with mayonnaise and lettuce. I snuck in a single chicken thigh as well so I could enjoy a bit of skin as well. So good that I'm sure we will have a third trip to...
Read moreBusy place. Chicken is OK.. have had it here for years, but last number of years, it seems the zesty, wonderfully tasting Chicken, has become nothing but pure salt. Not near as good as it once was. Seems they lost the recipe that the original owner perfected, or maybe when the new owners bought the business, the original seasoning recipe didn't come with the sale ??? Either way, fix your mixture. Anyone can make a cheap batter, load it with salt, and dip chicken in it. I'm sorry, but it's become repulsive. The customer service, wait, there is no customer service, only robots behind a pane of glass. Lastly, prices. $60 for 18 measly, small, pieces of chicken, cheap frozen fries. Small gravy and small coleslaw, is absolutely ridiculous. Sitting there waiting for an order, and the people around me, waiting for orders, complaining back and forth to one another, about pricing, complete strangers, is a sign of whats to come, if things aren't bettered. This used to be a reasonably priced, good food restaurant. That's no longer the case. Have been going here for over 40 years. No longer. Not after the...
Read moreI was craving a burger but decided, based on the name to get the fried chicken instead. I was not disappointed. While waiting for my 3 piece fried chicken I noticed that most people were picking up orders mainly containing large boxes/buckets of fried chicken. Is the chicken that good? My anticipation grew. This place has been around since before I was born (I'm 47) and if they were not doing things right they would have closed a long time ago. The chicken was succulent. Moist and flavorful. KFC? No, bra, A & K Lick-a- Chick. The coleslaw is creamy and delicious. The fries were standard crinkle cut frozen, nothing to write home about, but the chicken was the star of the show and made up for it. I don't know how many times I drove by this place with intentions of stopping and never did, up until this time. I'm so glad I did. Don't make the same mistake I did all those times by not stopping. Stop, get the chicken,...
