Lengthy review.
Extremely disappointing experience for a “fine dining” restaurant. There were two other tables when we went, which we should have taken as a red flag. My date and I ordered the $65 set menu in addition to 6 Vancouver oysters. We both ordered the romaine salad, lobster bisque and foie gras, but both chose different mains, ordering the striploin and the lamb.
The salad and house welcome drink were fine. They served us orange juice with chopped canned peaches, which is lacklustre for the price point. The salad was an unchopped caeser. My problem with the salad was they served us our foie gras five minutes after our salad and oysters came out?? I didn’t even have time to finish before they brought it to us, which is strange for an upscale restaurant, but this isn’t even my worst complaint.
I had two oysters in the hopes that the second one would be better - it wasn’t. Both were old and fishy. We left the rest there.
The foie gras was actually even worse, it was oily and charred. There was no flavour aside from an unpleasant burn, and I gave mine to my date because I couldn’t get more than two bites in. It was served with an ugly salad, a cherry tomato cut in half and a pickle ???? Why was there a pickle next o my foie gras? The pickle was actually surprisingly the best thing I ate at the restaurant. Everything else sucked. I’m not even done.
They served our soup after the foie gras. It also was really terrible. I don’t know what was in there but it wasn’t lobster bisque. We left it there.
Now for the mains - both were served with mashed potatoes, another cherry tomato (?) and a slice of mushroom (???). The mashed potatoes tasted like they came from the powdered box mix, I don’t know if they puréed them to get them to such a mushy consistency but it was honestly really disgusting. They also fortunately left a piece of whole potato in my mash so that I could confirm that it was real potato: thank you chef. The single slice of mushroom they left on my mash was RAW. I’m just as confused as you are.
Now for the steak - both mine and the lamb had no flavour. It was very clearly not seasoned before cooking, which made for a very unpalatable and dull cut of steak. The cook was fine but didn’t save the taste. Both my date and I left three fourths of our dishes there. This is important for later.
Thankfully, at this point the server checked on us. We explained to him all of our complaints, and he went and checked in with the chef and the manager, only to come back out and tell us the management changed and maybe the style was more “Hong-Kong,” which is why we didn’t like it.
I am from Hong-Kong. I’m no stranger to their cuisine. The food was not more “Hong-Kong,” it just sucked. I was actually appalled they would even try to excuse the bad food by saying our palates aren’t used to a different kind of cuisine, to someone who was also used to that cuisine ???? Where are the critical thinking skills?
The worst part is we voiced all of our complaints, and not even the chef or manager came out to check on us or apologize for our experience. It was the same server (who was NOT the manager) who came back out to apologize and present us with our bill. We were charged the whole $160. Nothing was taken off; not even the oysters. No discount. We left most of the food on the plate, sent it all back to the kitchen so they definitely knew it was terrible, and we weren’t offered any kind of compensation. Absolutely ridiculous, I’m actually livid writing this review. It was a waste of time, money and even the effort it took for me to write this. The worst part is that all I can do now is post this and not go back there.
Don’t eat here. They didn’t care about us so they obviously won’t...
Read moreLong story short: Absolutely unacceptable. They can't even make potato's right, the steak was McDonald worthy. Prepare to be put to sleep by slow service while you suffer through elevator music in a warm and stale environment. Rating: 0.25/5 Server: He tried. My wife thinks not.
Alright guys, the actual long story. Service: The guy who served us was okay, though he is rarely there, and the service was terribly slow. We were there for 2.5 hours...what?
Our table of 6 had the same combo meal (though i did not try their seafood)
App:3.5/5 It was either their osyter, i Had the duck and my wife had their Salmon Know what, it was pretty darn good. I loved the duck, and the salmon was a nice Costco level acceptability. But what blew my mine was that they were all served on this sad raw leafy single salad, and by god, that was gross.
Salad: Wait, that wilted plate of local weed was food?
Soup:2?/5 In what world does someone need to show me there are actual lobster in a empty plate, before pouring me my soup from a tea pot? I suppose someone complained enough that they have to proof that there was lobster or some sort of meat, but that soup..poured in a can was baffling. Their bread was not served with Soup, and when we ask for the bread (more like dampster little buns), he kindly informed us that it would take 5 minutes. I said 'no problem, soup should have some sort of bread right? i don't mind waiting, all cool man.' He returns 20 minutes later with these stale room temperature warm bread, which he warned us twice, it is hot and be careful.
Steak: We all got the medium rare tenderlion, and he informed us that it is all done in a Chicago way. Well, guy they are a steak house, they CAN'T mess this up. Well colour me impressed All the steak was different in cuts, size, thickness, even the way they were prepared. I tried to take a photo of that black charred remain of a sorry excuse of protein, by the god. They wasted a good cow. My brother had the best piece of a good 1" or more thick of a slab of goodness. It looked perfect, where as the rest of the table got something alike what you would okay-pay for something that worth $5.00. It was more better on a burger than to be served on its own. Aside from that one good piece, ALL the steak was medium WELL DONE. Dry, sad, and we even joked we should all get rare or raw hoping for a decent way to cook. I took a bite, i just sat there, and think 'man. i want a McDonald right now. What was WILD is..THEIR MASH POTATO. THERE WAS NO SEASONING! It was..just...cardboard tasting I even asked the waiter about this, and he asked 'maybe you just like your food really strong' I laughed
Dessert: 5/5 Their cheesecake was actually fairly decent! It was some sort of unique peach cheesecake, was nice actually. Coffee 5/5: Also very good.
Guys, i paid $55-65dollar for sad lettice, patty beef, but good dessert and cake. What a joke.
Extra: I am no interior designer by all means, but whoever decided to board up all their windows just plunge the restaurant into eternal darkness that is only lit up by sad canadian tire xmas special discount LED lights that you find at dollarama
Whats worst is ELEVATOR MUSIC. ALL.THE.TIME. We were all so lul to a near slumber, that i would rather listen to mall...

This is the first time my husband & I tried this restaurant. We tried their $55 per person package. I thought it was a good value since it comes with a welcome drink, choice of appetizer, soup, salad & entree. Then comes with a fixed dessert along with coffee & tea. And given the overall Google Review of the place is 4 star, I expected it will be a good experience.
Let me start with the good ... Our server was attentive. The bread was served warm. They presented their dishes well. The place looked nice & modern.
Then here's the part why I'm giving this review a 1 star rating. Except for the bread, the rest of the food was not good. Their appetizer of smoked duck was so-so. The smoked salmon didn't taste fresh that we didn't finish it. The salad was unremarkable. Their salad dressing tastes like it's store bought. The cheese they put on the salad is cheap, not the parmesan petals you'll find in better restaurants. For the onion soup, the frozen ones you buy at Costco that you either microwave OR bake in the oven, tastes way better and has more gooey cheese than what they serve here.
The biggest disappointment was the ribeye steak. It was bland. And I spoke with the manager after dinner (since she asked how dinner was). I mentioned the steak was bland. Then she said that's exactly how they do it. They don't season their steak since it's Angus Steak. Huh? The Keg and Ruth Chris also serve high end Angus Steak but they do season their steak with salt & pepper before cooking.
She said if I wanted more flavour, I could have asked for their demi-glaze sauce. And I told her I did. That was also bland.
And not only was the steak bland, it wasn't even cooked properly. I ordered Medium and my husband ordered Medium Well. Both our steaks are bloody. We had to send it back to get them to fix is.
The dessert was definitely not freshly baked. It was a square of a cheesecake and I can't even figure out what cheesecake it was supposed to be. Seemed like they bought it from a cheap bakery then served on a nice plate.
Bottomline ... If you want a good dinner, go to Marlowe's. If you want good steak, go to the Keg OR if your budget will allow, go to Ruth Chris. I won't be coming back nor will I recommend this place to...
