Four of us from Ontario dined at Earles on June 23. We had been informed by several sources that we could expect good quality home cooking with friendly service. I had been looking forward to a lobster dinner which was ordered along with a side of Caesars salad as a substitute . The waitress said there would not be an extra fee for the small salad. My husband ordered the fisherman's platter and our friends , the scallops , cod tongues and seafood chowder. The cod tongues should be crispy which these were not. The scallops tasted like they were baked along with bnacon grease and the chowder , not the best. The worst of the meal was the lobster. It is common knowledge that an experienced cook should change the cooking pot water every 10 lobsters or so to avoid tainting. The lobster I was served smelled fishy, tasted fishy and was rubbery. I had the others at the table try it and we all agreed that it was tainted. Our waitress offered to give me an alternative but I declined given that I was so put off on an appetite. As we paid up our bill, the cashier was very defensive. She also charged us for the substitute Caesar salads. Our waitress was no where in sight at this time so we could not offer a counter defense. The cashier's firm position was that much of the lobster had been consumed ( on a 1 lb lobster, there is not much to be consumed) therefore she would not give us a price reduction other than $4 off. There was no apology. We don't often if ever write a negative review, however we can honestly recommend that this restaurant be avoided. Suggest others in the area instead. Read moreWe were recommended this place by a few locals but were sadly disappointed.
We came at the end of the season and felt as though we weren't welcome. One of the waitresses handed us our menu as we walked past the bar without greeting us other than to ask if it was just for two. We then had to get another waitresses attention to even order. Their name sake burger the earle burger is called such as they are made in house and all others are frozen. We ordered the earle and was told they did not have any left...this was around 5:30pm. We did have some questions about some items being we are in fact visitors and wanted to know what some of the local favorites were but again, seemed to annoy the waitress more than anything. We ordered the cod burger platter and the moose burger platter. The cod burger was served with half a slice of tomato, no tarter sauce, and over cooked unseasoned unsalted fries. The moose burger had a full tomato slice but was unseasoned meat served with the same overcooked fries. Everything was so bland with the exception of the coleslaw which was more mayo than cabbage. We were never asked how our meal was during, our plates were not cleared away and we finally had to get up to ask to pay and still they were very inhospitable.
We watched the 3 waitresses spend most of their time talking with each other not paying much attention to the patrons at all. I would not...
Read moreCant say enough good things regarding Earles restaurant in rocky harbour. Our server was awesome, the food was amazing. We ordered a good amount of food, we started with an order of moose stew and a chicken burger with fries. My fiancé is normally not one to eat meat but like most people who deprive themselves from meat, she get cravings for the good stuff, and she was more than pleased with her chicken burger and even ate a piece of moose meat! We ordered a large moose meat pizza to go and i ate that beauty for the next 2 days, the moose meat pizza I received was life changing. Probably the best pizza i have had for crust and cheese. The flavours with the moose meat, mushroom and onion were very complimentary to the pizza as well. Very highly recommended. And its actually pieces of moose meat, not some minced up and mixed with other meats. Pure, lean, Newfoundland Moose. We also ordered 2 pieces of pie, one applebake (cloud berry) pie and one partridge berry pie. Both were very delicious and exceeded expectations, as i have never heard of either berries before our trip to the island. Thanks for contributing to the good memories on our east...
