We had such an incredible experience tonight at Spago’s on Dougall.
My brother’s girlfriend planned a surprise dinner with our family and friends to celebrate his birthday this evening. When we arrived at Spago’s, we quickly realized it was HOT inside! The owner came over and explained that their AC unit had broken and although they had technicians there all day trying to resolve the issue, it wasn’t working. So I’m sure you can imagine how hot it was in there. He ordered us two plates of gnocchi as compensation. This was obviously SO unnecessary because sh** happens, and it wasn’t their fault. I’m sure we’ve all experienced our fair share of broken AC units before. But we were so grateful for his generosity and kindness. An added bonus was the pesto sauce was made in-house without pine nuts, so at almost 25 years old, I finally got to eat pesto for the very first time!
When the entrées were being handed out, my mum accidentally took a pasta plate that wasn’t hers (hers had added veggies in it) and started eating it because she figured the missing veggies was just an error in the kitchen. When the server came out with more plates, we realized my mum took someone else’s plate! They were on the complete opposite end of the table (there was a whopping 15 of us), so we had no idea they’d ordered the same plate without the veggies. So they had to re-order the other plate while the rest of us ate our dinners. Once again, even though it wasn’t their fault, the kitchen gifted our table with free dessert as an apology.
When the free dessert arrived, it was Nutella pizza. When the staff realized a few people at the table couldn’t eat it due to my allergy, they served us house-made ice cream that was 100% peanut/treenut free. I’ve never been able to eat ice cream at a restaurant before due to my allergy, so I was absolutely blown away and so grateful for the staff’s thoughtfulness. I’m honestly so used to being left out when it comes to desserts, so the fact that they thought of me truly warmed my heart.
I just wanted to give a shoutout to this incredible business. As a small business owner myself in the food/customer service industry, I know how hard some days can be. Although the staff were all incredibly hot and probably exhausted, they gave us such kindhearted, genuine service. The dinner was one we’ll never forget! Thank you, Spago’s for serving our community delicious food with grace, compassion, and...

I’m incredibly disappointed with my recent experience at Spago’s. I had placed an order for pickup and asked my 18-year-old daughter to pick it up on my behalf. When she arrived, she was clearly in the wrong part of the restaurant but instead of kindly redirecting her, the young women at the front appeared to laugh at her and gave incorrect directions, all while continuing their personal conversation. That kind of dismissive, unprofessional behavior is unacceptable especially in a service-based industry.
To make matters worse, the order itself was incomplete. We ordered a dinner for four but received only three pieces of bread. When I called, I was told by Bianca that they “only give what’s been made for the day” and there is no guarantee of receiving four. That doesn’t sit right with me ~ especially at a higher-end Italian restaurant.
We also ordered a box of six desserts but only received four. Apparently, the kitchen wasn’t aware of a menu change. The solution? I was told to leave my company and drive back to pick up the missing items. When I asked if a note could be left on my account to apply a credit next time, I was told to speak to the manager. Yet when I asked for the manager, Roberto wouldn’t even come to the phone. Instead, I was told to come in on Monday to speak with him in person.
As a busy single mom and grandma who works full time and coordinates family responsibilities across the city, I simply don’t have time to chase down corrections for mistakes that were not mine to begin with.
Long story short: I expected better. Spago’s has always come across as a classy, well-regarded establishment ~ but tonight felt anything but. Between the attitude of the staff, the order errors, and the poor follow-up, I won’t be returning. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of great Italian restaurants in this city.
thank you to the young man who found her wandering around and actually took the time to kindly walk her to the correct spot ~ THAT is proper...
Read moreThe atmosphere is amazing, I can easily see this location being rented out for small weddings or reception events. Lovely decor and great set up. The food was delicious apart from the desert. The quantity of food you get is huge so be prepared to come very hungry or to have leftovers.
The desert we got was bombolini which resembled more of a Nutella sandwich I used to take for school lunch rather than the light fluffy airy filled donut it should be. Also instead of piping the filling in they cut it in half and spread it inside which added to the sandwich vibe. Note, the first time the desert was brought out it was incorrect. The second time it came it was better but the gelato definitely had ice crystals in it and not that creamy - we just went with it at that point. My pasta was delicious but I wish it came steaming hot instead of lukewarm - not sure if it was the kitchen or our server being occupied. Eggplant parmesan was delicious and the mancotti was good but overwhelmed with cheese and needed something with texture on the plate. We loved our burrata shareable starter.
Our service started out great but as the evening went out especially when I think the table behind us arrived and was well known or friends with the server the attention on our table went down. The other table got parmesan cheese offered with their salads we did not. We had to literally stack up plates at the edge of the table so they would be cleared from the appetizer round. Had to request water multiple times etc ... It was the small things but if they were on point it would made the night perfect.
We came to spago in memory of a relative who recently passed (july2025) to celebrate his life as it was his favorite restaurant. It's something we didn't share with the staff (because I don't think you need to share those details to have great service) but if the food was slightly better (especially the desert) and the service was on point it would have made the night 10/10 rather 8/10.
I'd recommend going to spago and would come back again if I was...
