This is a lovely small brewery located in the fishing outport of Port Rexton. They have done a wonderful job converting an old warehouse, and the ambience here is splendid. A large inner space with vaulted ceilings and exposed beams gives atmosphere, while a generous patio outside has hammocks, lots of stools, muskoka chairs around a Fire pit, and lots of tables and chairs with views over the town. There’s a great grilled cheese food truck on site as well in partnership, which also happens to make a terrific fries, dressing and gravy! Now the beer. The beer is great, well brewed, predominantly variations of IPA with American IPA dominating, though there’s some interesting variations to be found. The porter is well rounded and has a lovely deep oaky flavour, while the red is not overly sweet. The big standout is the “high-five” farmhouse ale, which seems to be, for all intents and purposes, a spectacular wild ale the likes of which only comes along on those rare occasions when all planets align - I could drink that all day for the rest of my life and die happy. Not available for takeout, the pint is served in a tulip glass and is akin to a wet hop in favour and aroma, and best enjoyed while contemplating the Newfoundland scenery. It truly is in the top 10 of the finest beers I have ever...
Read moreOverall the experience here was just "ok". Our group each ordered a flight of beer and most of the selection was acceptable but nothing any of us would really drink again. The gose was the only of the flight I really enjoyed. Baycation blonde and chasing sun I had previously tried and enjoyed in cans, so aimed to try different flavors instead but regret that decision. Tastes in beer vary wildly, so your experience may be different. There were some flavors on their website that did appeal to me more but were not available, had they been it may have changed my experience.
Outside of the beer, the seating is limited when weather is poor since their outdoor seating normally allows better space. At the time we went it seemed more like a daycare and less like a bar, I don't recall having to navigate around screaming children at any other brewery. This is mainly due to the parents visiting and having a beer while getting their children a grilled cheese. It can be a bit frustrating to have your beer almost knocked from your hands with children running around in a place where there really should be none. There is minimal bar seating but it is incredibly cramped...
Read moreAwesome. Absolutely freaking awesome. Just what you need and everything you need. No fluff. Straight up brewery that focuses more on the beer than anything else. Nothing fancy but lots of character as well as interesting characters working there. You might see two beers on tap, you might see eight. It depends upon what they have available, worthy of their reputation. Heck if they run out they might be closed. Even closes when the staff feel like it! In the middle of relatively nowhere in an old converted school house. Parking? Not stellar, but what the heck does parking have to do with beer making? Nothing. Crowded or too warm inside? Find a picnic table on a naturally not perfectly level piece of ground (ahhhhhhh) and enjoy your beer. Want food? You might get lucky find some local group raising funds by serving up boiled mussels, stew or gosh knows what. Not many food licences out here - too far for some townie inspector to drive. Just a while lot of awesome beerness in one of the most beautiful and friendly parts...
