After a long day at the Falls, we were looking for somewhere good to eat nearby. Casa Calzone came up as a top rated restaurant nearby and all the positive reviews swayed me to stopping here! Their terrace looked like the perfect place to end a long day, especially with the nice weather.
As soon as we walked in around 5:20pm, the staff greeted us, then asked if we had a reservation. We did not, but the restaurant was practically empty and they had, without exaggeration, at least a dozen tables free. The staff member then recommended that, in the future, we should be sure to make a reservation because the dining room tends to fill up quickly.
But, as I said, the restaurant was practically empty. There was one party of 8 or so that was seated on the terrace and then another small group inside the restaurant, and that's it. Tons of empty tables. By some miracle, my party of two was able to be seated.
We opted to sit on the terrace and were quickly given menus and water. Prior to arriving at the restaurant, we had thoroughly reviewed their menu so we already knew exactly what we wanted to eat, but then I was nearly swayed by their Carbonara, which sounded delicious! I told the waiter that I was in between two choices and he gave me his thoughts on both options, that the Carbonara was more creamy and the Hipster had a great balance of sweet and salty.
Upon his words, I opted for their Hipster Calzone and my partner got the Taco Calzone, so we could both try dishes that they were named after--a Calzone.
As we were waiting, they also brought out an amuse-bouche of bruschetta, which was a nice surprise.
From that, it took less than 15 minutes to receive our Calzones, which looked absolutely gorgeous. The Hipster had a pile of caramelized onions on top of it and a perfectly browned crust. The Taco Calzone had a dollop of sour cream and a dollop of salsa, and then the waiter came over with a syringe of hot sauce, recommending that the Taco is best served with hot sauce injected inside. What an experience!
My partner said the Taco Calzone was very good, packed with flavours. When I tried a bite, I found it heavy, but delicious. The Hipster Calzone was good, but the cheese flavours overpowered everything, in my opinion. I will say, the dough was the best part for me, crispy and soft, though I don't think there was any bacon in my Calzone.
With my meal, I also had a glass of wine, the Artisan, which I do not recommend, unless you like dry whites.
Overall, my experience at this restaurant was good. The staff were very attentive, providing a fan to cool down the terrace, and routinely checking in on all their clientele. The food also came out swiftly and deliciously. I am excited to go back here and try some of their other foods--with a...
Read moreI recently dined at Casa Calzone, and it was truly a delightful experience from start to finish. This charming restaurant specializes in all things calzone, offering a unique menu that celebrates this delicious Italian dish in various creative forms.
We began our meal with fresh bread and butter, which was a perfect way to set the tone for the evening. The bread was warm and crusty, with a light, fluffy interior that paired beautifully with the butter.
For the main course, I opted for one of their signature calzones. It arrived golden-brown and perfectly baked, bursting with fresh ingredients and flavor. The attention to detail was evident, and it was clear that the chefs take pride in their craft. The waiter even mentioned, “There’s no wrong answer for what you order on the menu here,” which only added to the excitement of exploring the options.
To finish our meal, we indulged in their tiramisu. This dessert was nothing short of mind-blowing; it was light, airy, and packed with rich coffee flavor, balanced by just the right amount of sweetness. The layers of mascarpone and cocoa dust made it a heavenly conclusion to an already fantastic meal.
The atmosphere at Casa Calzone was warm and inviting, with attentive service that made us feel right at home. Overall, my experience was exceptional, and I can’t wait to return to explore more of their innovative...
Read moreWe visited the restaurant on a very hot day in August, and I have to preface my review with this before I say anything else. I assume the restaurant inside seems to run hot as it is because of the pizza ovens, but on this 40+ degree day, it was hotter than hell inside. If there was AC, it did nothing and the air was stifling. The tables are very close together which doesn’t necessarily help. The only other real quibble is that we tend to just stick to water for our meals and the water glasses they served us were so tiny!
Now, for the important parts - the food and service. My wife and I each got a calzone, I believe I got the Pavarotti and my wife got the “pimpee” and my daughter got a smaller portion pep and cheese. Let me tell you - these were unbelievable. Perfectly cooked, hot out of the oven, crispy, doughy, delicious and worth every bite. Phenomenal.
Our service was also excellent. Our waiter was so friendly, so chill, attentive enough and just seemed to love his job and stand by the food. Can’t beat that. Folks are working hard in there and the passion shows.
We were offered a chance to sign the wall, many of which seem adorned in graffiti from past guests. That’s fun!
In closing, my family loved this meal. The only downside is that I’d never visit again during the hot summer months - or I’d take...
