Boréal Univers Gourmand — Restaurant in Rivière-du-Loup

Our dining experience was top-notch. From the greeting by the hostess to the seating at the table. Our server was lovely and we conversed in both French and English. She was attentive to our selections and knew the right moments to approach the table to check in and follow-up.

The atmosphere in the restaurant was comfortable, and not pretentious. It has the elegance of finer dining, a place to dress up and go out for a nice date or a business meeting. It also has an atmosphere where friends and colleagues can get together to enjoy drinks, laughs and sharing plates. We felt relaxed there.

It has been some time since a meal has stood out for me. The dishes at Boréal Univers Gourmand did just that. The escargot in the wild mushroom cream sauce severed on leeks and sunflower seeds top with twizzled potato sticks was perfection. This was followed up by the squash risotto, again with a local mushroom sauce and topped with hollandaise sauce and fresh parmesan cheese. I cleaned the plate. I am typically a berry and citrus dessert lover, however, I chose the chocolate mousse. The mousse was served inside a pyramid cake that was easy to break open and provided that juxtaposition of the creamy mousse to the cookie like cake structure incasing it. The plate was decorated with shaved chocolate and syrup dollops and syrup drizzled on the cake. Devine!

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Universal Hotel for a weekend getaway and on our first night we chose your restaurant for dinner. The service was excellent, drinks were delicious, however the food was mediocre at best for a very steep price in my opinion. She ordered the Bacon Carbonara and I had the burger platter. Not even 5 minutes after we had ordered we received our plates. Which raise the question of how long the food has been prepared in advance. For the burger platter, my fries were good although I believe they were not fresh cut in-house, the burger itself the meat was on the colder side and the coleslaw was good. The pasta was cooked to her liking, but had about 4 little pieces of bacon in it and the serving was less than what she has anticipated. So needless to say that we were disappointed of the food experience overall. Not to mention the average cost for each plate of about $20. I understand the costs went up, but it is not an excuse for poor output in food quality. Anyways. Seems like many patrons over the last few months have had the similar experiences. If you go back a year or so ago, everyone really like it which is not so much the case anymore. Hopefully management can turn it around? We went to Boreal for my birthday supper and as usual it was an amazing supper and the waitress was super great. We spent over 200$ with a generous tip for the four of us which is fine with us because it's expected with the quality of food. I personally have mobility issues and walk very slow. We were parked in the handicapped parking space and as we were about to pull away a waitress named Veronique came to our truck and very ignorantly asked if we paid our bill. I looked at her and said yes and my husband offered to show her our receipt and she refused to look at it. She said the reason is because we left "quickly" which is false, I walk like a snail with my mobility issues and we waited 5 minutes after we paid to leave because I was finishing my drink. I will never drive all the way here from New Brunswick to come here again (which we did for my birthday supper) I am disgusted by the way she treated us.
