We had a great fish and chip experience last night. The haddock was good size, crispy and flavorful. The shrimp didn't stand a chance on the table and the fries were fresh cut (chip truck style) and cooked perfectly. Our Friday night family dinner was thoroughly enjoyed.
J Monks is good fish and chips with a fry master at the helm. Its a little pricey but don't we all have to make a decent living for the work we do and provide a living wage for those we may employ. Keep up the great work J Monk staff!
And for those of you who don't know how to travel home with take-out food like fish and chips take heed! (especially if your travelling more than a couple blocks) Get there early so you can pay and be ready for your order. Open the bags in your vehicle and relieve the steam for goodness sake... that why your crisp is gone! Let the fries breath people. You don't have to flop them wide open or anything just let em breath... your food will cool off slightly, stay a lot more crispy and be ready for enjoyment. Then when you get home, immediately remove the fries from their cardboard coffin and put them into a nice big wood salad bowl or the like... grind some salt on them and shake them up and bam onto the table. Likewise get the fish out quick and ready to serve! Say the blessing and enjoy. I have a similar process for pizza and wings but that is for another...
Read moreToo much change and not for the better unfortunately. I always like to see new owners thrive. But the change inn food is not for the better. The fries, taste frozen, not cooked. soggy, had to have been a cup of some kind of seasoning salt. Bring back REAL french fries cooked properly. The fish, was meh. What got me was the batter bowl. Looked like a days worth of dried batter on the top side. Frankly disgusting. Ordered the coleslaw. Was not coleslaw. not sure what it was but it was dry and some kind of sauce for it on the side. Coleslaw is cabbage not dried kale or lettuce flakes. Coleslaw needs time to soak up the vinaigrette or mayo. Alost 4 bucks for dried shredded leafy greens. Fresh Ingredients A Must not an option. They alway's used fresh ingredients for the most part and you could tell. My stomach is still upset 4 hours later from the grease. This place use to cater to a large portion of elderly folk. I can only imagine they will not return after trying the new menu under the new management. Your new ok, tighten up your meals because that place could be a little gold mine as it as been for as long as I can remember. Cater to your public not your self's. Your not shooting for Michelin Star status right?. Just my 2 cents and babble. I do wish you the...
Read moreWe tried JmonkS a couple weeks ago for the first time, and I was splendidly surprised by the quality and portion size of the fish and chips here. We ordered some haddock and chips to go, and had a little miscommunication when we put in our order, but the staff here are really friendly, kind, and happy to accommodate you. The vibe in that small shop is awesome. Lot's of good energy with really friendly, kind, fun-loving people. The haddock and chips were great. It's the only other place than Chip+Malt all the way in Newmarket that actually provides a substantial piece of fish. It was a thick, well cooked piece of haddock I had, and the first half of it was perfect. Crispy, not too oily, and no doughy kind of texture. The back quarter was a bit of a different story. Seemed that the batter near the back needed some extra time as it was a touch doughy/had sort of an undercooked batter thing going on, but don't let that deter you. For the price they charge for the portion size, I could've cut that whole section off and still would have been really pleased with this order of fish and chips.
I will be...
