I'm shocked to see so many good reviews of this place. If there was a zero star, I would give it that. The service was terrible - so slow. They were out of EVERYTHING. I ordered the Lobster Roll and the server proceeds to tell me they are out of lobster, clams, mussels, scallops, and soup. It would have been really helpful to know that before ordering drinks and waiting for 10 minutes before even getting them. The food arrived somewhat quickly and the fish and fries were bland and tasted freezer burnt. And with the tiniest portion of coleslaw and gross Kraft brand tartar sauce. The server never came back to fill our drinks and only at the end of the meal when I asked for the bill informed us we had to go to the cash inside to pay. The washrooms were also filthy and rundown. And I think they are also confused as to what constitutes a 'local beer'. There are so many great craft beers in Nova Scotia. But Coors and Bud make the list?

During our visit to Tatamagouche, NS, we had the pleasure of having lunch at Chowder House on Main. What a treat it was! This charming eatery truly encapsulates the warmth and welcoming spirit of the town. The star of the show was undoubtedly their clam chowder. Served steaming hot, it was both delicious and plentiful, with a rich, creamy base that was perfectly seasoned. Every spoonful was a delight, comforting and filling - exactly what you'd hope for in a classic Maritime chowder. The ambiance of the Chowder House on Main added to the dining experience. It's a cozy spot that feels like you're dining in a friend's home, with décor that reflects the coastal community's heritage and welcoming charm.

If this is all you read, then get the clam chowder. But now, in more detail: The Chowder House has a very cozy atmosphere, with great service and good prices. The salad (pictured) was good... But chowder was fabulous! With not just clams but shrimp, scallops, and fish too, and seasoned perfectly, served with warm bread. Did I mention it smells absolutely divine? For a very reasonable price too! To the owners: I was expecting my baguette to be toasted with the soup, but it's still very good nonetheless. I'll be sure to come again the next time I'm in Nova Scotia!

1- Had to ask for cleaning the (dirty) table; otherwise... would have eaten in a piggery 2- This "place" doesn't deserve neither the name of "restaurant" nor the word "food" as for what is sold in your plate 3- Fish not fresh, badly cooked, pabdly presented, very small portion, the whole among 40 or 50 unfrozen (but still cold) shrunken green peas and 8 or 9 carrot slices. No oil, no butter, no seasonning, NOTHING 4a- "Chowder" was all the same with an evident presence of artificial thickenning "product" 4b- "Salad" is just 9 or 11 (tiny) pieces of harsh tomato with a lot of green leaves (takes more room in your plate, costs nothing and give the false impression of a full plate), RAW onions (are you 200% or 300% MAD??), a little commercial sauce in a cup and "DIY" policy. You wouldn't give that to your rabbit... Hardly suitable for compost... 5- ALL food was definetely TASTELESS, hardly warm, vapid, boring and expensive 6- Not the slightest effort or imagination to do a nice presenting in the plate; nothing at all, totally shameful 7- A frozen and heated meal from any grocery is 500% than this garbage. How the HELL dare you serve that crap in touristic places? Is it because you're already sure we'll never come back again? 8- When I see (here or in the "guest book") all the positive opinions, I really wonder what the hell these people usually eat, either in "restaurants" or even at home... 9- Don't worry, it's about the same thing almost everywhere in Nova Scotia, unless you accept to be ransomed for hardly decent meals in some "restaurants" where you will have to pay a minimum of 100/150 $ per person. 10- Never again...

I've been travlling through dozens of countries, 4 continents, lived in 6 different countries over 3 continents, eating in all sorts of restaurants (tiny, family, 5 stars, atc, etc. in almost every kind of "cooking culture" in the world. This place in definetely a NO-GO. Keep far away from...

What a let down, we have been to many local restaurants and even one a few buildings away from this restaurant.

Where to start … it was bad all around

We came in and stood there waiting to be acknowledged be the staff…. After 3 or 4 minutes we finally hear from behind the counter “ sit anywhere you want” so we find a table and sit down. Ended up getting our own menus after , never did see a wait staff until I got up and walked to the cashier station and asked if we were going to be served at all, since we had been sitting for 15 minutes. The staff gave me some line about not knowing how to use the POS system and the other girl was working her first day. So back I go … sit down finally 5 min later a older lady doing the serving shows up . Pretty sure she was new to because she didn’t have a clue about anything on the menu and seemed annoyed when asked about different foods and what was in them. She made her tone quite noticeable and was quite rude with us . My wife has allergies for food and always asks when we go out , and this is the first time we have been treated like an inconvenience over what we ordered .

Overall my rating for the staff is 1/5.

The food was bland , didn’t offer any thing to make up for the service . The fish and chips were boring , soft and greasy

The burgers were plain , the only compliment Is my wife was happy with her seafood chowder .

Food overall 2/5

At 6 pm ,1 hour before close the owner / mgt comes and locks the doors in and out ( massive fire code infraction) and closed the restaurant to anymore guests.

My suggestion is to find some where else to eat, any where else …. If your a tourist coming to indulge in some local eats , I’d suggest the nook and cranny or to...

A friend and I tried going to another restaurant for lunch on a hot Thursday in August, but it was taking very long to get service. We left and came here instead. We were greeted immediately and told we could take whatever table we wanted. There are a few six-seater tables and a few two-seater, for total seating of maybe 30? (at least during covid times). There were two other tables taken at the time, around 1:00? Anyway, it's a nice little spot with lots of natural light, simple decor, very clean. I tried the lobster roll (can't find an online menu to double check the price). It came on a warm long, soft, seeded, multi-grain 'sub style' bun, good chunks of lobster, microgreens and maybe a simple mayo? Overall decent, fresh and healthy-feeling. My friend had their fish & chips and said they were good, not overly special, but no complaints at all. Their frozen fries are the kind that I can only describe as sort of almost lumpy/battered-looking/similar to the style at Burger King? LOL But fine. I had a slice of the Skor cheesecake for dessert (just the right size, sweet of course, but good) and he had the key lime cheesecake (strong, good flavor). We each had pints of the Tatamagouche Brewery Hippie Dippie draught? I was too full in the end. This was only maybe my 2nd or 3rd time in this area of the province in my 40+ years, but would have no problem returning here again to definitely try their chowder or...
