Read moreTL;DR Very popular. Authentic food. Decent-Good tacos. $5.50-7.50 taco. Limited parking.
Parking: We went on a Saturday, at about 4:15 PM and they opened at 4:00 PM. Finding the location was not hard with their signage quite visible. However, finding parking was an issue. They had some young guy who didn't speak English, telling people that the parking in the back was closed. We had to use a parking lot 2 business to the side.
Location: When we got there, there was already 9 tables being used by clients. It seemed to be a very popular restaurant. There were about 16 tables in total, including 3 high tables by the entrance. The music was a bit loud if you were sitting in the left side of the restaurant but not bad at all if you were sitting on the right side. It was mostly reggaeton music.
Service: They weren't in a rush to take our order which was a good thing so we could look over the menu without pressure. They had plenty of staff working and seemed to have a tight system.
Food: They started off a with a complimentary small basket of fried nacho chips, with a tomato based sauce which can be quite spicy for novice spice eaters. There are some sauces on the table: the green sauce is not spicy but tasty. The orange sauce has a chipotle flavour which is best paired with the nachos. The darker sauce is very sweet, like mango based and not very spicy.
I got the "Al Pastor Tacos" and without adding any sauces, I found them decent with pretty authentic flavour but very subtle. They pack the tortillas with meat, which are about 4" wide but it's only 1 layer so they rip kind of easy but not a big deal. They added a small amount of real sliced pineapples, lots of celantro and a much needed lime on the side. Adding the green sauce on the taco is okay and the orange sauce changes the profile of the taco to more of a smokey one.
I also go some "Carne Asada Tacos" which were jam packed with meat. The carne was cooked to a slight point of crisp. It has a pretty good flavour but did have a thick buttery or fatty flavour with it. Alone it's okay but with lime, it's better and much better with green sauce and best with chipotle sauce.
Ultimately,
I'd go back and try a couple other dishes. Just will be sure to show up earlier enough so I'm not stuck waiting...
Read moreOur Los Gyros adventure began promptly at their 4 pm opening. The place quickly filled with patrons. Despite a noticeable wait time, the dishes we ordered were well worth the delay. Upon entry, helped by a door attendant, the restaurant's authentic charm was unmistakable, adorned with vibrant Mexican artwork and the staff proudly donning shirts with the Mexican flag. We ordered 4 Al Pastor and 4 Sirloin tacos, plus a single Chicken Fajita, which came with 4 small tortillas. By 4:15 pm, almost every seat was filled, and our food took its time – a full 40 minutes. Our wait was tempered by lively conversation, complimentary chips and salsa, and an exploration of the four distinctive sauces at our table: a sweet one, creamy cilantro, sriracha mayo, and a super spicy salsa. The highlights were: Al Pastor: It was a zesty blend of thinly sliced pork topped with pineapple and cilantro on a corn tortilla. The savoury-spicy balance was spot-on. Sirloin: These bites packed a rich, beefy flavour complemented by a generous amount of cilantro. I noted how the beef slices were slightly crunchy. Chicken Fajita: The highlight was the chicken fajita. Served on a sizzling hot plate, the combination of hot, juicy chicken and crunchy peppers and onions wrapped in soft tortillas delivered both auditory and culinary delight, despite being slightly oilier than expected. The restaurant also had some room for improvement. The staff, while helpful, were stretched thin, leading to occasional lapses in service, like the request to refill our welcome chips, which was never fulfilled. The washrooms were busy, and I never got the chance to visit them. Shared sauce bottles, slightly greasy upon arrival, raised a question of cleanliness. Portion sizes left something to be desired for our party of three. In terms of seasoning, a dash more salt could have elevated the flavours for me. The tight parking added a practical concern, suggesting the venue's space struggled to accommodate its popularity. In summary, Los Gyros provided a full Mexican experience with some of the best tacos I've had this year. Despite the shortcomings noted, I would not mind returning to try some of their...
