Why was the Great Wall of China bulit? The Great Wall of China was built to protect China from its enemies and invaders from the North, especially the Mongols. The Mongols were a tribal group that would regularly conduct raids into China. Despite the wall, the Mongols eventually conquered China. The Wall also kept Chinese citizens from leaving China.

Actually, China is not the only country in history that built wall along its boundary. Athens, the Roman Empire, Denmark and Korea all did so at certain time in the past. The Hadrian锟斤拷s Wall in northern England, built "to separate the Romans from the barbarians", extended 117 kilometres from Wallsend-on-Tyne in the east to Bowness-on-Solway  in the west. Excellent restaurant! You may not know it is a restaurant as you drive past-I sure didn't; thought it was a greenhouse. But it's a restaurant, and the food is excellent! We had a stir-fried beef dish and an eggplant dish that were amazing. Only downside was the pork dumplings seem like they went a bit overboard on the jasmine. Other than that, great place for a meal after visiting...

On my one morning/afternoon off at the 2008 Olympics, we went up to the Great Wall and then stopped here for lunch. It's beautiful, and the food -- arranged on lazy susans so you create a mini-buffet at your table (maybe not now because of COVID-19) -- is terrific. Nothing out of this world, but it's the perfect place to go after trudging along the steep passages...
