An absolute gem of a low-key restaurant with incredible food, amazing ambience and views of the river, and even better people. Please don’t miss this spot!! It just opened up which is why there are few reviews… but couldn’t recommend this place enough, whether you’re passing through or just finished your water adventure. We had 3 casados con pescado and a chicirones which was delicious. Oh, and an unexpected complementary pollo soup to start.. which was perfect after the chilly waterfall. Only $40 in total for 3 people, which is reasonable. There are two sweet ladies working the place. They didn’t speak much English but they are very kind and patient. Luckily, we speak some Spanish… and we ended up having an amazing conversation (they were helping us practice!). They also showed us their property, which includes a couple of new cabanas, a pool, and a trail with private access to the river and a waterfall.

We had 3 meals at Rancho Los Gavilanes and enjoyed all of them. Our favourites were the casado (fish), nachos, chicirones, and green plantain. Prices very good value (meal for 2 plus a 1 litre bottle of beer generally came to about $25-27). All our meals were during a time when Costa Rica was experiencing excessive rainfall and we were actually the only ones eating there. However, it was lovely to try and converse with Rosa and Carla (our Spanish is non-existant and their English was limited) - they were very friendly and made the experience of eating there very memorable - thankyou!

Such a great spot! My family had the best time here. Yummy food, good prices, amazing atmosphere, you are right next to the Rio Blanco you can hear it as you are eating. Also because it’s right next to the river it feels a little cooler, temperature wise, I guess the other way too “Cool!” The only issue was the waitress didn’t speak any English and I didn’t speak Spanish but she was so sweet and patient with me it worked out perfect. Definitely recommend this place. You won’t regret it.
