Craving some authentic Falahi Egyptian food that has it all and not sure where to go? Well you have to try Hagouga, where the food can't get more authentic than that, it simply has it all. The only problem, is that you have to maybe wait for up to 2 hours+ if you are visiting during rush hour. Eventhough the restaurant is huge, there is enormous number of people dining there on a daily basis, making it very busy at almost all times. The decor of the place is very Egyptian as if you are in the delta fields by the nile, where the houses are decored exactly like that.
You might find exotic tajins and items on the menu, but I encourage you to go out of your comfort zone and try different things, you won't regret it (hopefully?). It took us a while to decide what we want to order because we wanted to order everything, but we have to select in the end of the day. We went with a classic roz meaa'mar tajin, which is a creamy rice dish topped with full fat cream and Ghee that goes inside the oven until it has a golden crust, this one is a must try. We also ordered a bunch of mixed grilled meat like kofta, kabab, shish tawook and tarb. They had a really nice charcoal flavour, but filled us up very quickly, and I feel that their speciality lies somewhere else anyway. Some of the most famous items you should get there is roqaq with duck, which is a hearty pastry filled with pulled duck, a dish that is very authentic. Grilled sausage and liver is also a very decent option.
I ordered a tajin called alhaj, which I was reluctant to try at first because of the exotic ingredients, but I'm glad I did. The portion is huge, so make sure you are sharing with someone else, otherwise you might get a heart attack (joke). This tajin contains oxtail and testicles slowly cooked for 6 hours in bone marrow sauce with mixed potatoes and green pepper. Yes it is not your average tajin, and you can only get it here in Egypt, so you decide if you want to try it.
For dessert, they only have mehalabeya which is a light creamy Egyptian dessert, I won't say more you just need to try it yourself. What I respected in this restaurant, is that even though it is very busy and famous, the prices are actually cheaper than almost any competitor which makes trying this restaurant a no brainer for me. It won't be the last time for...
Read moreExtremely busy place. Food is excellent. Service is subpar. When you first arrive, you get a ticket that has a number of, and then you wait in an outside seating area till your number gets called. When I arrived, we got ticket #794 and they were calling for ticket #680. It took about an hour wait to get to our number to be called (which is better than I anticipated). Once you get called in, there is massive indoor and outdoor seating areas. Servers are little slow to responding and to clean tables after prior customers. Also they send you to sit on tables that are either too large or too small for your party and then you figure it out yourself! Our server, Mbappe, was very nice, yet slow to help. From getting our table ready and cleaned, to order taking, bringing the check and to-go boxes; everything was unjustifiably slow. Once ordered, food takes 10-15 minutes and it will be served (even though they may tell you 30 minutes). Food was abundant and delicious for the most part. We ordered 5 plates for a group of 4, and it was more than enough. It is meant to be shareable plates rather than individual plate for each one. We got rice moaamar, tajin bamya with meat, molokhia, Egyptian sausage, and moza with fatta. We also got some condiments including tahini, baba ghanoj, spiced tomatoes, and cheese dip. Overall they all taste good, but little heavy with so much fat in it (whether it is the meat fat, or the excessive butter it is cooked in). My favorite plate was the sausage! Phenomenal! Easily 10/10. Followed by the moza , which I would rate 9.5/10. From the condiments, the cheese dip is the bomb! Goes well with most of the food anyway. Bread is fresh and tastes good. Overall I’m happy with the experience. I do feel it would be much better if they use more lean meats and...
