So I heard, read and saw videos about this thing called 'koshary' that must be tried in Egypt. It's Egypt's national dish and one that happens to be completely vegetarian (something I found to be fascinating in an Islamic country). So I had to try this dish out. While I love to travel and try different things, there was something so comforting about this dish. It looks super complex yet the ingredients are super simple (I've yet to try making it on my own) but the flavor profile is DYNAMITE.
Consisting of 3 different kinds of pasta, (a tiny elbow pasta, thick spaghetti, thin spaghetti) rice, chick peas and lentils; that's what comes in the bowl. Next to it, they give you a slightly spiced tomato sauce which you are supposed to add to this mixture in the bowl and mix it.
To add some heat, they have some chilli sauce in a fancy container that you pour and mix again.
The first bite I had was so complex yet so delicious. A mixture of simple flavors just mingling together in your mouth. The nuttiness of the chick peas, the slight bite to the lentils (they seemed to be about 90 to 95% cooked to leave a slight bite), the mixture of all the carbs along with the now spicy sauce that I created.
I know this is a bold statement but I think I like this way better than the regular pasta which seems bland in comparison to Koshary. I liked it so much I had it two more times before I left Cairo. ...
Read moreVery bad experience, not professional staff, after staying about 10 minutes finally one if them come to take order in spite of it was not crowed at all after that one of them turn a loudy speaker on and played very noisy shaaby sond which is not proffisional at all many customers asked them to turn speaker off . After about 20 minutes order become on table and it's very weired to take about 25 min. To get Koshari plate. Any traditional Koshari restaurant will prepare your plate in less than 5 min. With fair price and acceptable service. It's not relevant to your big name I used to eat in your main restaurant in down town for more than 20 years. Please keep your eye on your delivered overall service quality.
