L' abbaye — Restaurant in Avallon

We went to the restaurant only and didn't stay at the hotel. Pros: food was absolutely delicious. We ordered the tasting menu, of which each dish was chosen by the chef. Each one was better than the last.

Cons: service was substandard. Only one server for the entire restaurant, who did her best running from the outside bar to the inside restaurant. Such a strange choice of layout.

Eventually another server turned up to do the absolute minimum. At one point we saw him bring in a board for the terrace bar instead of checking on the diners, who were waiting on drinks. I couldn't help thinking he was avoiding the customers.

We saw another two women help themselves to drinks at the bar but not help with service. One woman just sat smoking with a dog while making herself drinks and chatting to the server, who was desperately trying to do her job. It was a strange vibe.

Such a shame as the food was so good, but ultimately people return for...

So disappointing. None of the facilities on offer were available Restaurant closed. Bar closed. Given its remote location is definitely a negative. Feels almost deserted. As lovely as the lady that checked us in is, it’s not enough. May as well stayed in a bed and breakfast! After driving all day we chose this hotel because we wouldn’t have to venture out. Nice meal, bottle of wine….so we thought. Unfortunately we had to drive another 19 kilometres to get something to eat! The very reason we chose to stay in this hotel but none of the facilities advertised were in operation. Also non refundable. Definitely not worth the price or the detour. Very nice venue overall. The room was super cozy, spacious, and nicely decorated. Great amenities including complimentary in-room breakfast which was an incredible touch. Staff were super flexible with check in and out hours. Then the restaurant was very cozy and food was superb, classic but with a twist of modern ingredients. The bar was also a plus as there was a jazz singer and a dj afterwards. Nice variety of wines and cocktails both at the bar and the restaurant. Free self parking.
