La Guinguette du lac — Restaurant in Béziers

Visited here frequently during many stays in the area over the years. Sadly, over the last couple of years, pretty much since lockdown, it’s either been closed or if open, a pale shadow of earlier times.

During an April stay in Homps we found it was open and took a chance and popped in for a beer. Imagine our surprise when a friendly and known face greeted us. It was the face of Angelin (sp?), who’d last greeted us at a local restaurant alongside the Canal du Midi last year.

After a quick catch-up, we ordered our drinks and were seated inside the restaurant which was a blessing as it was blowing a hoolie outside as evidenced by the breakers across the Lac de Jouarres with the tops of the surrounding trees nearly touching the ground. This served to remind us how much we had missed our visits in the past overlooking the lake and watching the odd windsurfer ‘enjoying’ trying to maintain control and dignity.

Angelin left us with the menu to peruse which although modest, looked interesting. We’d eaten already that day but agreed that we’d return to eat later in the week - we did, twice, for lunch and were very impressed on both occasions.

I had the Brochettes Poulet on both visits (so good) whilst my wife had the Croustillant Chevre Chaud and then on the second visit, the Plat du Jour.

The brochette was excellent with succulent chicken and various vegetables interspersed along the skewers, accompanied by frites and a small salad. The croustillant was by all accounts superb with the chevre chard wrapped in filo pastry.

The carafe (25cl) of red was a delight and the name taken for further investigation.

After pud and coffees the cost for the two of us was less than E24 each I’d say, worth every cent.

Having the standard basic French menu of grilled something with chips frisée lettuce and balsamic dressing we assumed that expecting a basic lunch wouldn’t be asking too much after a hot walk around the lake. We arrived shortly after 1pm to a half empty messy restaurant. A stressed young woman told us panini only when we asked for a table before disappearing. We found ourselves one of the empty clean tables and waited for service. Another more insistent French family arrived after us and were provided a rapidly cleaned and set up table and offered the full menu by a manager/ proprietor who looked at them and us with little more than contempt. We meanwhile still had no menu or mise en place whilst he returned to the bar to glower at us. We left without even acknowledgment. This sadly was the second restaurant with indifferent service we had tried in Homps in a week, which might explain the some of the other local closed down businesses. Some places don’t...

J'ai pas du tt aimé. Nous sommes arrivés avec mes amies au moins 15 min pour nous calculer ou même simplement nous dire bonjour. 10 min pour nous servir une pression je trouve ça abusé sachant qu'il n'y avait personne. Vraiment pas accueillant les serveur parle à peine et ne souris pas. Nous sommes retournés à notre place. Et les serveurs nous ont demandé de partir plus loin parceque on fumé soit disant a côté d'un bébé qui était le leurs (déjà a quelle moment on apporte son bébé au taffe) bref nous étions déjà a une bonne dizaine de mètres donc on a pas compris mais on a dit pas de soucis et on c'est mis beaucoup plus loin. Ils nous ont redémander de bouger. Donc on a du se mettre à un endroit sans lumière et la table été sale. Tout cela pendant que mon amie attendait une assiette de mozza et bien sûr pensez pas qu'ils nous ont demandé de bouger poliment ou même agréablement. Mon amie a enfin pu aller chercher son assiette après 15 longue minute juste pour une salade alors qu'on lui avait dit 8 min. Le repas et l'alcool sont les seuls points positifs. Elle n'a même pas de fourchette alors elle nous dit pour rigoler '' sérieux ils m'ont même pas donner de fourchette pfff ''. Alors la MALHEUR ! Les serveurs sont venus pour nous dire que si ont été pas content on pouvait partir et que ont avait pas a parler comme ça. Ils nous ont menacé que ils allaient nous demander notre carte d'identité a cause de l'alcool demandé alors que durant la commande ils nous ont rien demandé bizarrement, sachant que nous avions entre 18 et 20 ans. Dernière cigarette avant de partir. Le serveur revient pour nous dire toujours avec son aimabilité encore non présente qu'ils allait fermé. Ont dit juste pas de soucis. Ah oui et bien sûr tout le temps depuis notre arrivée nous avons été regarder de travers par les serveurs. A ÉVITER a tout pris a moins que vous voulez passez une mauvaise soirée ou...
