The setting of the restaurant is magnificent, a long winding drive up the mountain to the snowy refuge. We were greeted warmly when we arrived and showed to our table promptly. Our table for two was quite small, and it was in very close proximity to the surrounding tables. This was fine, but I would’ve preferred a little more breathing room especially with the amount of trips the staff was making past the table.

The recommendations were good and the servers and sommelier were very friendly and knowledgable. The wine suggestion was fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

The food was good, we started with snails which were excellent, my partner then had the Bresse chicken which was magnificent. My beef wellington was good, but it needed more of a second lager under the pastry, it was more as if it had just been brushed with the pate. The meat was a little on the cold side. The gratin and salad were brilliant.

The pudding was underwhelming, a couple of plain biscuits and a chocolate sauce with some ice cream. Maybe we didn’t order well but I expected something a little more exciting to finish the meal.

Another thing to note and be aware of is that the place is extremely hot - lovely when you enter from the mountainside but not as good when you’re halfway through a bottle of red wine and you made the error of wearing a sweater with nothing underneath.

We did enjoy the meal but if I could make a few changes, I would like to have been in the front of the restaurant nearer the entrance where you get more of the atmosphere and with a little bit more room around the table so I couldn’t hear every bite of the couple next to us. Oh and to lower the temperature just a little!

Overall a memorable dinner but some small changes would’ve made it...

Le Refuge – A Delightful Dining Experience in Megève

Atmosphere: Cozy and Warm

The ambiance at Le Refuge is exactly what you’d hope for in a mountain restaurant—charming, intimate, and perfect for a family dinner. The warm decor, soft lighting, and friendly service make it a great place to relax and enjoy a wonderful evening. It has that special alpine charm that makes you feel at home.

Our experience with this restaurant was phenomenal. Everything from the service to the food to the atmosphere was superb. We arrived early (at around 6:30pm) because Google told us the restaurant would be open (we had a reservation for 7:00pm) and the staff were kind enough to seat us and let us look over the menu while we waited. Once the restaurant was open for business the service continued to be excellent with attentive and friendly staff. Our starters were all excellent. We had an assortment of salads in addition to the green salads served with the fondue. We also tried both the natural and truffle fondue both of which exceeded our expectations in terms of taste and texture (although the general consensus at our table was that the natural fondue was better). We also tried the Côté de Veau, beef Wellington and Char (fish) all of which were exceptionally prepared and full of flavor. Finally for desert we shared the French toast. This was a very inspired take on a basic dessert. I can honestly say this was one of the best French toasts I have ever tasted. All in all this was a great experience for me and my family and I would say that Le Refuge is a must try for anyone...

We Came A few minutes before 7 PM we found the door to the restaurant is chained. We turned around and we found some employees who came back and open the door for us. It looks like they want everybody to come after 7 PM when they are ready. We were the first in the restaurant and we get a lot of attention . In general the food is very good and tasty, but overpriced for the meals provided I have ordered the chef suggestion a steak cooked medium rare, but what I got is medium.well. costing €60. Any Michelin star restaurant never make this mistake. We also ordered fish and it was very good and the side dishes were also excellent. The surface is very good and attentive to our requests. The place is nice but cloudy and a bit noisy once Everybody is in for dinner.
