La Ferme Gourmande — Restaurant in Calais

My wife and I visited for dinner and were greeted warmly into a nice-looking restaurant. The appetizers were a fantastic start to the meal.

However, we did feel quite rushed to order, with multiple inquiries about drinks and food within the first ten minutes. We opted for the set menu, which, in hindsight, led to an overwhelming amount of food. The portion sizes are simply huge; the starters were surprisingly large, and the mains even bigger.

While the pork loin was absolutely amazing and the almond tart excellent, the beef main was quite fatty, and I felt the side salad on the plates was unnecessary given the generous servings.

We ended up wasting a significant amount of food, and we noticed other tables...

Pleasant ambience, generally attentive staff. Ordered a bottle of Burgundy Pinot Noir from the wine list at 30 euros (way above what I would normally pay, but it was a special occasion); sampled the wine and tasted vin ordinaire. Called the waiter and the wine was speedily changed for something a little better. Starters were excellent; main courses both disappointing (who serves lettuce on a plate with hot food?) and microwaved chips I'm afraid don't cut it in an expensive restaurant. Desserts were good. The service was very slow - 25 minute wait to order a drink on arrival, 20 minute wait to order a desert. No bread on the table and no top up of table water. We had to keep asking to order more drinks as the service was not attentive

The food is ok but nothing super special, we had been looking forward to a special meal on our last night in France but this is mediocre. We were expecting more from the reviews.

The menu is not great if you have fussy children, there were no simple dishes like chicken and frites for example.
