The Hotel La Taverne Du Parvis is situated right on the main square of Coutances, on the Parvis Notre Dame, facing the magnificent cathedral of the same name. Parking is not a problem because there is lots of free parking on the main square, although obviously this is pretty busy during the day. The hotel has comfortable rooms on the front and side, costing about 60 euros a night for bed and a very good breakfast. The rooms at the front look out over the main square and the church. The rooms at the side look out over the Mairie, which is also a magnificent turn of the century edifice. The bar at the front is great for a coffee or for a drink and there's always lots of life as this hotel is right at the centre of the town and is a very popular meeting place. The staff at the hotel are all very nice in a genuine and straightforward way. The restaurant situated at the side of the hotel is very good. It is set out on two levels, the upper level tending to be used for reserved private parties. The food is excellent and not too expensive. This is a well run establishment right at the heart of a very genuine French town. It is very relaxed and has a healthy busy atmosphere. Coutances would make a natural stop on the way to or back from the Cherbourg / Caen / Le...

Read moreHard to find a restaurant open on an early weekday evening but this one, on the square by the very grand Mairie was welcome and much better than a stop gap. A good choice of beers to start with and then local oysters for two of us from one of the set menus (less than 20€) with a good Sauvignon and then two excellent burgers made with proper steak haché, frites and salad with a good bottle of Medoc and Île flottant and pistachio/caramel ice cream to follow. Our spouses had an excellent terrine to start, then gammon cooked in cider and creme caramels to follow. With 4 black coffees and drinks we paid 30€ a head. Unpretentious food but high quality, well cooked and full of flavour. Service friendly and attentive. We...
