L'Atelier — Restaurant in La Rochelle

We'd spent a while wandering the promenade of Châtelaillon trying to make up our mind on where to eat on our last night in France. I'd noticed l'Atelier as we were walking round and took a look at the menu, a few things caught my eye so we went in. A small yet airy restaurant with a large seating area out front and a cozy secluded terrace out the back. We decided on a table in the restaurant. Our server was friendly and spoke English with us, helping the ordering process. We had both decided on the set 3 course menu at 39€. Our drinks order was taken and swiftly delivered, I was driving so the other half had a small bottle of rosé, which was served to her perfectly, smelling the cork before offering a taster, then serving, don't see that done very often nowadays!

The food was outstanding, I had the famous house fish soup, and it's accolades are justified, it came served with small pots of rouille, cheese and croutons, so you could add whichever one you preferred, the rouille was my choice, and it only added to the dish. The other half had carpaccio of beef which was as tender as anything. We both chose the Fillet Bordelaise, essentially steak, chips and gravy, but this was taken to another level, the steak, cooked rare was unbelievably tender and the stock for the bordelaise sauce must've been reducing for weeks, it had such a depth of flavour. We chose to have dessert, the other half had the cherry gateau, which was tasty, I had the cheese plate, with a selection of 4 local cheeses, served with bread and what must have been a home made gooseberry jelly, stuff like that does tend to come out of a jar! The nicest surprise was when we got the bill, we'd had a lot, and it was extremely good, but the bill in no way reflected that, or the wonderful service we'd received.

My advise is to leave the promenade places for the tourists and head here, this is the best place to eat...

Nous y sommes passés pour un repas un midi en semaine, accueil souriant et cadre agréable comme on aime, c'est propre et bien tenue. Nous avions été un peu influencés par certains avis alors nous y sommes allés avec des attentes et espérant trouver une super adresse. Les formules sont assez larges pour y trouver son bonheur mais après il faut avouer que certains plats sont nettement en retraits. Le poireaux que mon père avait pris était très décevant, portion très réduite, il avait demandé sans œuf et on lui avait promis pour compenser plus de poireaux... Il a eu un poireaux couper en petits carrés, bon niveau quantités on a connu plus généreux et la sauce n'était pas vraiment top. Ma mère a été plus heureux avec des crevettes et des bullots, ras tout était bien, y compris la déco de l'assiette. Pour mon tartare de saumon nous l'avons trouver un peu neutre, pas de quoi y revenir car il manquait un peu de caractère, pas mauvais en soit mais vous l'oublirez rapidement après y avoir goûté. Ma maman a eu une assiette de la mère, petite marmite avec du riz le tout façon thai c'est encore une fois une bonne pioche. Mon papa a eu du poison, un petit bout, pour le régime c'est bien mais pour ce faire plaisir il en manque un peu, riz également et petits légumes, le tout manquait un peu d'assaisonnement. Mon tartare influence japonaise, une bonne découverte nuancé par des frites au allure industriel aussi bien en apparence qu'en texture et en goût... Dommage que dans la même assiette on trouve une belle initiative accompagner de frites qui sont moins bonnes qu'au Macdonald. Les desserts, deux baba et une profiterole. Très correct dans l'ensemble pour les baba, sinon profiterole un peu trop chargé en sucre, alors oui c'est un dessert et oui il faut du sucre mais il en existe des plus tempéré niveau sucre. Autre point, le pain, sans être artisan boulanger vous verrez tout de suite qu'il à été réchauffé, il croustille comme une tartine et c'est très dommage car pour un endroit destanding avec des prix élevés il faut au moins proposer du pain de qualité, c'est un détail mais ça compte. Donc au final c'est pas mauvais mais très inégale et si les prix étaient plus raisonnables on pourrait y retourner et j'aurais mis 3... 3,5 si possible en étant sympa mais la vue que c'est tout de même plus de 100 euros pour 3 on peu pas dire que ce soit le bon plan de l'année, croyez moi même à Paris ou c'est pas cadeau on trouve aussi bon voir mieux et pour beaucoup plus abordable donc c'est pour ça que je donne 2 sur 5, c'est vis à vis des autres restaurants qui font un peu plus d'efforts sans tomber dans la facilité ou le piège...

Having tried so many of the small restaurants in Chatelaillon Plage we found this beautiful spot on our second last night here. We spoke very little french and had many problems in other restaurants but our waiter (and the other staff) had excellent english. He was most helpful and the food choice here was superb. The food was also tres, tres savoureux!!

We were very happy with the whole experience and can't wait to get back some time soon to try the rack of lamb or some of the other tasty sounding fish dishes on their excellently varied menu and specials board. You would be mad to pass up the opportunity...
