Le Surf — Restaurant in Lesparre-Médoc

One star gives this place credit! Only because we have to rate it! Honestly, we have been going to this restaurant for years because of the great service and delicious food. Yesterday it was my birthday so, along with my husband, our children and friends, we went for dinner as a ‘treat’. 🙄 We had THEEEEE WORST MEAL WE HAVE EVER EATEN IN FRANCE! What a JOKE! They had nothing left on the kids menu (9euros!) so said they would do ham and chips for one of the children. Out it came.... 3 bits of ‘rubbish ham’ and a few dried up / warmed up old chips. My friend had what resembled ‘dog food’ for 22euros! (Not the steak hache that was offered on the menu) and apparently it tasted how you would imagine dog food to taste , to beat! We had mussels, now, they tasted good but very small portions and again, dried up/ warmed up old chips! The waitress seemingly ‘couldn’t be bothered’ and seemed ‘stoned’ or drunk and it was all a bit too much hassle! 105 EUROS LATER! Day light Robbery! And a birthday meal ruined! We don’t have loads of money to ‘burn’ so we save up for special occasions such as these.....we feel sad that our money has been waisted when in the past we have been here and eaten so well. Fréquentant Hourtin Plage depuis de nombreuses années, j’ai connu Le Surf avant la reprise par l’actuel gérant, “Steve”. Depuis ce changement, la qualité de l’accueil et du service s’est nettement dégradée.

J’ai pu constater à plusieurs reprises : -La vente d’alcool à des clients manifestement mineurs. -Le gérant en état d’ébriété pendant son service. -Des insultes proférées en français par le gerant à l’encontre de clients étrangers (allemands, anglais…) qui ne comprenaient pas les propos. -Des gestes violents envers des clients, mineurs comme majeurs (y compris des gifles après leur avoir servi de l’alcool). -Des expulsions agressives, parfois même en dehors de la propriété du bar.

Ces comportements sont inacceptables pour un établissement recevant du public. Le gérant ne semble ni qualifié ni apte à assumer ses responsabilités, ce qui nuit gravement à l’image et à l’ambiance du lieu.

Pour passer un moment convivial et en toute sécurité, je recommande vivement de se rendre dans un autre bar situé plus bas dans le village d’Hourtin Plage, où l’accueil est chaleureux et le service respectueux.

As a long-time visitor to Hourtin Plage, I knew Le Surf before it was taken over by the current manager, “Steve”. Unfortunately, since this change, the quality of service and overall atmosphere has significantly declined.

On several occasions, I have personally witnessed: -The sale of alcohol to customers who were clearly underage. -The manager being visibly intoxicated while on duty. -Insults in French directed at foreign customers (German, English, etc.) who could not understand the remarks. -Physical aggression towards customers, both minors and adults (including slapping customers after serving them alcohol). -Aggressive removal of customers, sometimes even outside the property of the bar.

Such behaviour is unacceptable in any public establishment. The current manager appears neither qualified nor fit to handle his responsibilities, which severely damages the reputation of the venue.

For a friendlier and safer experience, I strongly recommend visiting another bar further down in Hourtin Plage, where the welcome and service remain professional...

Depuis le changement de propriétaire, ce bar est devenu pour moi l’un des pires endroits de la station. L’ambiance y est malsaine, l’accueil glacial, et certaines scènes auxquelles j’ai assisté m’ont profondément choqué. Le comportement du gérant me met très mal à l’aise, au point que je préfère éviter complètement les lieux. En tant que résident secondaire ici, je constate que beaucoup de gens du quartier, habitants comme vacanciers, ne s’y sentent plus en sécurité. L’hygiène semble négligée, le respect des clients n’est pas au rendez-vous, et l’atmosphère générale est oppressante. Je trouve qu’il y a, juste à côté, des établissements bien plus professionnels, respectueux et agréables — il est clair que je ne remettrai plus jamais les pieds au Surf et que je déconseille vivement d’y aller.

Since the change of ownership, this bar has become, in my opinion, one of the worst places in the area. The atmosphere feels unhealthy, the welcome is cold, and some scenes I have personally witnessed were deeply shocking. The manager’s behaviour makes me extremely uncomfortable, to the point that I now completely avoid the place. As a part-time resident here, I’ve noticed that many locals and holidaymakers no longer feel safe there. Hygiene appears to be neglected, customer respect is lacking, and the overall atmosphere is oppressive. There are far better, more professional, and more respectful establishments just nearby — I will never set foot in Le Surf again and I strongly advise others...
