Of course, so far there isn't an actual time machine. But the Hotel de France, while only 20+ years old captures much of the spirit of its old coaching inn heritage. It brings back fond memories of our many trips in this country over 50 years. We oldsters have a tendency to remember many good things that are gone and perhaps brush over some aspects that were less ideal. Still, standards of service have slipped everywhere and you don't see the large core of professional hospitality staff that used to be the norm.||For a three star hotel, they provide excellent value. The courtyard restaurant is lovely and thick glass everywhere shields you from the almost constant truck traffic on the busy street outside. ||Our bed/mattress wsa firm and large, perhaps the best on our 5 week trip, including stays at 4 and 5 star hotels. Read moreOn a road trip through the Occitanie region my wife and I spontaneously decided to stop over at Mende. Our stay at Hotel de France was a most pleasant and indulging experience. |A spacious suite on the top floor of the main building, with a private balcony to the back offering great views over hilly pine tree forrests, was our cosy home for one night. A window to the front located over the courtyard and wintergarden around an old olive tree inspired to rest, watch and absorb glimpses of a typical old town ambience at sunset. The lovely decorated room with a very comfortable bed and large ensuite bathroom were spotless clean. |We enjoyed a delicious 3 course dinner at the hotel, with a perfectly cooked foie de veau and a tender veal steak as main dishes. The selection of desserts was amazing: their creme brûlée and mint sorbet with peach and rasperry are a must! This fine dine experience was rounded off by a bottle of Château Grézan, a very smooth and caracteristic Languedoc red wine cuvée. |We will definitely return to to stay at Hotel de France when ever our travels will take us back to this wonderful region in the southwest of...
