Bistrot Constant — Restaurant in Montauban

This restaurant actually deserves 4 stars but the behaviour of the maitre de at our second visit for lunch has left us with a very sour taste. The other staff are delightful and friendly. The food is excellent, although not cheap. The position is lovely, right next to the canal. We had only shortly before been talking about how charming the vast majority of French people are and forgiving of our poor French. Indeed we had been largely speaking with the wait staff in French. After an excellent lamb dish (for madam) and steak (for me) the Maitre de (Hugo) approached not long after we had finished and barked at us (in English) ‘what do you want for desert’. We replied that we would like ‘un petit moment’ to be treated with an eye roll, grunt, ‘Pah!’ and he then stormed off. He then gave me the evil eye every time he walked past. I also noticed after this that he monstered the staff at every occasion he interacted with them – every time he spoke (angrily) with them they did no look as though they were enjoying their work and it is a testament to their professionalism that they would immediately plaster a smile on their face when dealing with customers. Mon Dieu, we had an exceedingly good dinner. How refreshing to find a place that has justified pride and confidence in their art without pomp and ceremony that typically goes with it. I had a bad omen as our boat got stopped at 6.25 pm, four locks and 3km north when the eclusiers went home so we walked there to try for our 7pm booking (they were very understanding as we were 15 minutes late and afterwards walked back again with my 86 year old mother! How we laughed! And sang chansons on the way (back !)

A real gem that deserves a place in one's heart we will return again next year and hopefully moor...

This restaurant is situated at the end of a little port in Montech. I was surprised to learn that such a top notch restaurant exists in this. This place was founded by the Michelin star chef Christian Constant. Judging by the menu, we knew we were in for a culinary adventure. There are so many delicious choices on the menu, each so different from another. There is something for everyone. It was difficult to choose because I wanted to taste them all.
