This time my Swedish friend and I travelled together and after a six hour drive from the Chunnel were pleased to see this hotel, dead opposite the Thermal Baths and altogether very " Napoleon III" in appearance. Reception rooms newly decorated, our room very clean and large, double aspect. Not too keen on the curtains, reminded me of my grandparents house where I could never get the sashes to pull across the whole way. Knew it would happen here, and it did, so I saw the dawn rather earlier than wished for. Amused by the bathroom, in typical frugal French fashion 1) new shower 2) replaced loo seat on oddly coloured ( mauve, shaded) old toilet 3) rather cracked turquoise tiles behind new handbasin.|| No lift and we were on the second floor, in this case the new stair carpet started at floor 1 and the old mustard one had been left in for the first floor. My French is appalling but I had to make an effort, at which point the owner ( manager?) met me half way. My Swedish friend, fluent, was a great hit and nothing was too much trouble for her, but D. has had this effect on men for the forty years I have known her so no change there. Continental breakfast, absolutely fine, all very fresh and plentiful. We had two evening meals here and both were super. When I turned up with a puppy and a large crate on the final evening the staff couldn't have been nicer about him - even when presented with a filled poo bag as a very big, inadvertent, test of their hospitality. ||Wandering around town later I realised I had never seen so many old folks, either they are drawn to the thermal baths or they never die as a result of having so many thermal baths - hotel had a good supply of charming grannies who were happy to pass the time of day. For the price, excellent value but expect it to be old fashioned and quiet, as thats what we found. Great location and although its unlikely I would ever go back its somewhere I would stay again - I imagine after a couple of days you feel as if you have lived there forever, in the tiny town the world...
