What can I say that hasn't already been said? I was very excited to try this place as I am a huge fan of Sushi Ran and am generally an all around uppity sushi snob. Ju-ni has a very sleek ambiance and chic space, although parking can be tricky in this neighborhood. Omakase now costs $90 for 9 pieces + appetizer and dessert, but this does not account for the $30 supplement which includes uni, wagyu and toro. IMO, you can't do the omakase without the supplement, but $120 is not bad at all considering the pricing of other omakases in SF.
Every piece was unusual, delicate and surprising. Generally I feel an omakase will consist of a few amazing pieces, mostly good pieces, and sometimes unfortunately a few average or even bad pieces. But every piece here was wonderful and thoughtfully crafted. Take, for example, the cherry smoked mackerel. Or ikura topped with frozen ankimo shavings. I thought Sushi Ran served an outstanding omakase but this was even better! They do serve a smaller shari proportion but I appreciated the giant slabs of fish I was given and left quite full. Our chef, Steve, was kind and hilarious and very indulgent of my social media addiction. "When you're ready, I'm ready" -Steve
I believe reservations are booked solid for weekends three months out but there are still a few weekday spots left. Run, don't walk! Grateful to have gotten to eat here, can't wait to come back. My new...
Read moreWhen we got there and sat down, my partner was thinking of leaving. Most people are just drinking/few eating. Menu was in French only and a bit confusing. Not much English spoken, so hard to get clarification.
But good thing we stayed. Food was quite good and lots of value for money. Fried chicken appetizer was large, and not overly breaded or greasy (which we wouldn't like). Duck parmienter was a standout - kind of like a Shepard pie, but with duck meat. Got 2 sides of greens, and they were large bowls of green beans, snap peas, mushrooms, and yams- not measly portions of wilted greens as can be normal in Europe.
All told, 1 appetizer, 2 mains, 2 sides of greans, 2 glasses of wine, and bottle of sparkling water for...
Read moreVery disappointed. Decided to order a meze selection but they didn't have enough plates for all of us! Then tried to order the entrecote - but that had all gone too. Finally opted for the chicken burger but asked for the bun to be removed and was presented with the thinnest slither of chicken, we'll overcooked with straggly old chips and a little Lettuce on the side, presumably to add SOME moisture! (see photo). Totally unappetising and certainly not what I'd have expected for the price they charged. Service was very slow and music too loud too. Not a good...
