Le Bistro d'à Côté — Restaurant in Saint-Lô

We had a quick dinner, the brasserie looked semi-inviting. The joining restaurant was packed and this restaurant half filled. The wait for ordering took long, and even for the drink to arrive even longer, after more then an hour the food arrived. The restaurant looked disorganised. Some waiters were friendly, others flipped their eyeballs up when asking them a simple question. The food was greasy, cheaply prepared, my wife even had fish and chips that clearly came from a frozen supermarket product. The 'homemade' Fries were soaked in grease and soft. My tartare was pretty much tartare without noticeble other ingredients, I even cut up some onions from the garnish to make it anywhere interesting. Then came paying the bill, my wife first attempt : You had to stand in line at the bar for 15 minutes, where they were washing the dishes (see photo), no level of hospitality whatsoever, they didn't accept applepay, so we had to stand at the back of the line again another 15 minutes to pay by physical card. The current rating must be fake, never again, jamais plus! Stay away.

My husband did a little research and found this place in the wonderful location of Carentan. The reviews mentioned Jay who we were delighted to meet on arrival and he didn't disappoint. My french is rusty, thankfully his English is excellent and he expertly guided us through both the wine and food cooked by his wife Swanita. Two of us had the house duck confit dish and have to say it's the best I have ever eaten, it fell off the bone and I struggled a little as so much meat but battled on because it was so divine. We had beautiful crepes for dessert (apparently cooked by Jay) What a find, when I next go back to France will definitely be heading back there. Thanks Jay and Swanita (hoped we've spelt that right). Think it might be the best meal I've eaten...

Que dire de ce restaurant ? Un vrai choc… et pas dans le bon sens du terme. Nous étions venus l’année dernière et avions passé un moment parfait. C’est donc avec enthousiasme que nous avons décidé de revenir cette année. Malheureusement, quelle déception.

Commençons par le point positif : un grand merci à la petite serveuse châtain, très gentille et professionnelle, qui a su adoucir un peu notre désillusion. Elle a été adorable du début à la fin.

Passons maintenant au repas… Une catastrophe, et je pèse mes mots. Nous avons commandé une entrecôte à 28 € (le prix n’est pas un problème, mais à ce tarif, on s’attend à un minimum de qualité). Nous avions demandé une cuisson saignante, et nous avons reçu une viande bien cuite, voire trop. Pour un amateur de viande, la déception est immense.

Quant à la pizza… un vrai mystère. Une pâte difficile à décrire, et une garniture presque absente. On cherche encore ce qu’on était censé manger dessus.

En fin de repas, j’ai gentiment partagé mon avis à la question « tout s’est bien passé ? ». La gérante m’a alors expliqué qu’elle ne pouvait pas faire remonter les remarques au cuisinier car celui-ci risquerait de lui répondre : « Vous n’avez qu’à le faire vous-même si vous n’êtes pas contente ». Pardon ? Vous êtes la patronne, non ? Et vous préférez servir des plats médiocres plutôt que de risquer de froisser votre cuisinier ? En tant que professionnel du commerce, je peux vous dire que les clients ne devraient jamais faire les frais de l’incompétence ou des conflits en interne.

Enfin, nous avons aussi été témoins d’un comportement de management très discutable. Une erreur de la serveuse a été corrigée en salle, devant les clients, de façon peu bienveillante. Quand on n’ose pas recadrer son cuisinier mais qu’on n’hésite pas à rabaisser une jeune serveuse devant tout le monde, il est peut-être temps de remettre certaines choses en question.

Un « geste commercial » sur une simple boisson pour compenser une entrecôte immangeable… si ce n’est pas du foutage de gueule, je ne sais pas comment le qualifier.
