Since this pub is very close to my home and has a fine selection of whiskies, I have been willing to endure the owners' contrived kindness; they are German; she really is all right, but nervous, anxious to please and make up for his lack of hospitality, he is grumpy most of the time, and they barely ever laugh or seem to have fun themselves. I honestly wonder why they thought a pub would be just their thing. Due to this, the atmosphere is a bit strained; during the working week nothing much happens, and the few regulars glued next to the bar look dull or grim, nobody gets into contact with one another, no jokes are flying between guests and staff. They flourish with festivities such as St. Patrick's Day, this is what makes their business, still what they offer cannot put up with former Berlin legends such as The Old Emerald Isle in Kreuzberg. I guess what made them win a Guinness price some years ago, was the attempt to create a cosy interior and offer a nice menu beveragewise. Obviously they put much effort and focus in this aspect. Nevertheless, they may have visited Ireland and UK, but scarcely got an idea there about how to treat guests and make them feel relaxed, appreciated and welcome. They would not last one evening behind a bar in Dublin, not to mention the countryside...well...she...perhaps. So if you want an evening with your friends, then being the only table having a craic, enjoying fine whiskies and the get-together you have arranged, with no original element or surprise from outside, you still may find this one a tolerably nice place to go. My résumé: Irish pubs in Ireland - 5 stars, Irish pubs in Germany - 4 stars with a general "thanks for trying so hard with all the shamrock", The Old Emerald Isle - 3 stars for the authenticity of staff/service, food and events - it certainly helped that it was in Irish hands, so they knew what they were doing, 2 stars for any other pub with a kind staff and a clean toilet, 1 star for a pub with a good selection of drinks, but little more. I don't want to be too cruel, so it's 2 stars, so long and thanks for...
Read moreA surprisingly roomy pub hidden behind a cinema, it attracts no passing trade, and consequently has an insider feel to it. The background music is in the background and, in contrast to the hellholes in the city centre masquerading as irish pubs, the TV is not blaring non-stop soccer. Only important matches are shown, e.g. Ireland v Germany (1:0) and the EC in June. One corner of the pub is done up like Granny's parlour. This is where the afficionados meet for whiskey-tasting sessions, a bizarre concept to a whiskey drinker but a harmless pastime. The prices are above average, as are the patrons. A quiet civilised pub, of which there are few in this neck of the woods, it is unfortunately open only in the evening and not at all on Sunday or Monday. Easily reached by tram, S Bahn Schöneweide is a couple of hundred yards distant on the other side of the Spree. Well...
