Seamen's Club - Bremerhaven — Restaurant in Bremerhaven

My mom used to work here when I was around five years old. Sometimes she’d bring my brother and me along, and we’d sit quietly at one of the tables, painting and keeping us busy while we waited for our grandma to pick us up. Even at that young age, the place left such a deep impression on me. The comforting smell of freshly cooked food, the clinking of dishes, the laughter and chatter that filled the space. It all became part of a core memory I still carry with me today.

It wasn’t just a restaurant; it was a community hub, a place that felt alive with stories, history, and connection. The fact that the Seamen’s Club had been open since 1954 speaks to how meaningful it’s been to so many over the decades. Sailors, workers, families, and locals alike. That the USS headquarters has decided not to reopen is not only sad, it feels like a real loss. A place with that much legacy deserves to be honored, not quietly closed...

This is the most authentic American food experience available in maybe all of northern Germany, but for sure in Bremerhaven. Originally intended for members of the American merchant marine and members of the armed forces, the USS center is now open to the general public.

Food served is basic diner staples, with some emphasis on various types of steak. Condiments are served out of the plastic bottle and portions err on the side of too much, but all this adds positively to the experience. Prices are very reasonable.

If you can visit only one restaurant in Bremerhaven and will not be spending time in the US in the near future, choose this one. Please note: kitchen closes one hour before closing of center and maybe earlier if attendance is low. If you want to have your dinner late (after 8:30 PM), better call them...

Wow, ich weiß ehrlich nicht was ich dazu sagen soll. Mein Mann ist Amerikaner und hat wohl vor Jahren dort schon mal sehr gut dort gegessen, weshalb er mich auf einen Samstag Abend dorthin einladen wollte... Wir hatten reserviert und bekamen einen Tisch mit voll gekleckerter Tischdecke. Nun gut, okay. Dann stellte ich meine Tasche auf die Heizung, die direkt am Tisch angrenzte und bei der die Abdeckung fehlte (die direkt neben dem Tisch stand) und die Heizung war nicht nur staubig sondern schlicht versifft!! Schien aber keine Sau zu interessieren! Wir bestellten die Getränke, bei dem ich hier schon das falsche bekam und als wir ein paar kleinere Fragen zu dem Essen hatten, beispielsweise wie groß die Hähnchenstücke seien konnte man uns keine Auskunft geben... na gut. Für unseren Sohn bestellten wir eine Kinderportion, bekamen jedoch eine normal große. Der Burger war okay. Die Bratkartoffeln waren jedoch frittiert und das Steak zäh. Dazu gab's „Saison“Gemüse aus der Dose. Vielleicht sollte denen mal einer sagen, dass Bonduelle das ganze Jahr Saison hat! -.- Ganz ehrlich, ich hab viel Verständnis aber irgendwann hört es dann auch auf! Der ganze Laden wirkt vernachlässigt und herunter gekommen (einer der Vorhänge hing zur Hälfte runter). Bedienungen, denen die Wünsche ihrer Gäste Schnuppe sind und leider genauso riechen, wie der Laden :-/ Schade eigentlich doch ich hab selten so schlecht gegessen....
