An Unforgettable Stay at Colmberg Castle – A True Fairytale Experience!
Staying at Colmberg Castle was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived, it felt like stepping into a storybook — perched high above the Franconian countryside, the castle offers breathtaking views, centuries of history, and warm, genuine hospitality that makes you feel like royalty.
All just a short, convenient drive from the fairytale town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The location could not be more perfect for exploring the region while enjoying peace and tranquility away from the crowds.
What truly sets Colmberg Castle apart, though, is the Unbehauen family. Now in their third generation of ownership, they are the heart and soul of this incredible place. Friendly, down-to-earth, and genuinely dedicated to their guests, they make you feel completely at home while surrounded by centuries of history. Their warmth and professionalism create a welcoming atmosphere that’s as rare as it is refreshing.
The staff were exceptional — attentive, welcoming, and eager to share the castle’s fascinating history. Every interaction felt personal and sincere. The rooms beautifully blend medieval charm with modern comfort; thick stone walls, antique furnishings, and thoughtful details create an atmosphere that’s both cozy and regal.
The on-site restaurant deserves special mention — absolutely phenomenal! The regional dishes were perfectly prepared, beautifully presented, and paired wonderfully with local wines and beers. Dining in the castle’s grand hall by candlelight was an unforgettable experience.
Colmberg Castle is more than just a hotel; it’s a destination in itself. Whether you’re exploring the scenic countryside, visiting nearby Rothenburg ob der Tauber, or simply enjoying the quiet majesty of the castle grounds, every moment feels special.
If you’re looking for a place that combines history, hospitality, and heart, look no further. Colmberg Castle Burg Hotel is an experience you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Read moreStaying in a hotel with so much history is definitely a privilege and we were very happy to find this gem of a hotel when we were planning our trip.|The castle is just as imposing as it looks in the photos and has the most beautiful view of the village and countryside. What makes it even more magical are the deer running around and feeding in the grounds below the castle.| I understand it has a very good restaurant, but, unfortunately, when we stayed it was closed due to summer holidays. Luckily, there was a little country inn just near the entrance to the castle so we had a good meal anyway.|Our biggest mistake was that we chose a standard room. We normally go for superior but the rates of the hotel are quite high and as we were only staying for a stopover (1 night), we unfortunately chose the standard which was a very small room on the top floor, with small windows and a slanting ceiling which I have come to hate. It makes me feel claustrophobic when it's just above my head. Sleeping in such a room, of course, did not make us feel like kings, as one other reviewer writes.|So, if you do choose to stay in this authentic, wonderful castle, I highly recommend that you pay that extra amount to get a front room, on a lower floor. The view from one of those rooms must be spectacular.|Breakfast was good and the sitting area very pleasant.|There 's also lovely sitting spots all around the castle.|The one thing I found strange are the very limited reception times and the fact that one can check in only after 4pm. When one is driving from far, from early morning, having to wait till 4p to check in seems somewhat unreasonable to me.|Other than that, we highly recommend a stay and, with it, of course, a drive to Rothenburg ob de Tauber which is...
Read moreIt was always on my bucket list to stay overnight in a castle and I did a lot of research to find one that was the authentic as there are a lot of places called a “castle” that are not authentic. I was so happy with my stay here - It’s the real deal.
We had the pleasure of staying at in two different rooms as we asked to upgrade for our second night. I recommend both types of rooms depending on your budget!
Our first night was in the double room with a bath. This was excellent, had a good view of the courtyard and the bath was nice. It was an excellent price and we had a lovely time here. At approx 200 euros a night when we stayed this was extremely good value and we were not disappointed.
However, if you do have the budget I strongly recommend you upgrade to the tower room. It’s a brand new room, built onto the old wall so you get the best of both worlds (new room/old authentic wall to make you feel like you’re in a castle). It has a fantastic tv that if you bring your own HDMI cord you can attach to a laptop. The bath is also extremely cool - it has a lot of features, lights and bubbles and is large enough for two people. You can also look through the old wall and over the lands making you feel like a king. We LOVED this room and would say it was one of the highlights of the trip for us.
The restaurant is also excellent
The booking experience directly on the website was easy to use and we were able to contact the hotel easily through their website...
