Arriving in Glottertal, situated in a very pretty wine growing village, we found numerous hotels along the main street, all looking very inviting and attractive. In a quandry, we asked at a local restaurant for a recommendation and told to go to the Gasthaus Adler. This we did and found it very family orientated run by mother and daughter, both proficient in english. Our bedroom||(Kandel) had a side view to the road and looked across fields to the church. Basically furnished||but comfortable with bathroom having two basins and a separate toilet, it was warm and cosy.||Not wanting too large a dinner, we ate with the locals - my husband had a fixed menu of salad,||venison and sorbet + wine and I had a salad + smoked trout followed by Zander fish - all of||which were generous helpings. Our beds were comfortable but unfortunately our sleep was||interrupted by traffic at 3.00 a.m. Breakfast in the dining room was cereal, fruit juice, cheese and hams etc., not much of a variety but then there were only seven guests. The dining room is a delight. Traditional Black Forest decor complete with portraits and paintings in oils, mounted ||deer heads and fresh flowers. This is a lovely old building, full of rustic charm with some fine ||wood carvings and much to peruse of the family history. It has the personal touch, especially||when asking advice where...
Read moreWe have been visiting the Adler for over 10 years, mainly as a stopover while driving from London to Milan. Glottertal is less than 10 minutes easy drive from the A5 Basel - Karlsruhe motorway.||||The atmosphere is wonderful, the food is good but it is the warmth of the welcome that keeps us coming back. The rooms are simply furnished, but quiet and spacious. The cooking is to a high standard with an emphasis on local produce. Don't miss the roast goose at Christmas.||||There is plenty to explore in the area and we spent a whole week here one summer. Apart from the attractions of the Black Forest it is only a few minutes drive to Freiburg and the Europa Park theme park is also close by.||||Glottertal must be a candidate for the friendliest village in Europe. I strongly recommend that you give it a try when...
Read moreMyself, wife, and daughter stayed up the road, and dined here on our last night of the holiday. My only regret is that we didn't dine here every night. The food is proper home cooked Black forest style, and is delicious. The deco is amazing, its roughly 300 years old, and it had the most beautiful Christmas tree I ve ever seen. The staff were brilliant, with the owner helping us greatly and talking with us as our German is non existent. The Adler has been in her family for many generations, and its been kept in the style you would expect. Very old family portraits on the walls, and modern family pictures which make you feel at home. On our next visit to the black forest we are going to stay here, if they have us. Choose the roast goose if its on. And have the cabbage. See you next year! John,...
