This was one of our great surprises while travelling by car in Central Europe. We were aiming to get close to the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain. Running late we stopped at Ramsau and found accommodation at the Hotel Oberwirt. We learnt that this venerable place welcomed travellers as long as 500 years ago, some tradition! The place breathes history but modern comfort has been added. The lift relieves you of climbing stairs. Reception was professional and very friendly. And the room! Unbelievably comfortably, homely, a balcony with a view towards the mountains, breathtaking. A clean and spacious bathroom added great comfort with both bath and shower, quite modern. The beds had us asleep in no time. But first we had dinner in the hotel restaurant, again, very traditional with much choice in local fare on the menu. Our surprise came in the morning after the plentiful breakfast. The hotel is situated right next to the 'Ramsauer Pfarrkirche', the picturesque little church well known from so many picture postcards and travel brochure illustrations. ||If we have one great regret: our itinerary did not permit a longer stay. It was such a comfortable room one could easily spend a week or more holiday time here. The hotel appears to offer guided tours into the mountainous surroundings. Ramsau lies in the 'Berchtesgadener Land' mostly a Nature Reserve, it is only about 150 km from Munich, less than 50 km from Salzburg (closest airport), Berchtesgaden and Bad Reichenhall not far, and countless nature walks all around in summer, and attractive for people seeking winter sports as well. And the Hotel Oberwirt in Ramsau offers a most comfortable base to come home to during your holiday. We would certainly stay here much longer if the opportunity came...

Read moreI give Hotel Oberwirt a four rating for many reasons. It isn't the fanciest place you can stay in the area, but if you want to met the local people and sample the culture this is a great place to start It begins with the wonderful welcome from Suzie upon arriving, and continues to the great local menu and atmosphere. You can stay in the pension next door which is newer and more modern, but I prefer the old original hotel. The rooms are clean but simple with wonderful beds and down comforters, and a short walk downstairs to the comfortable little dinning room, or the great terrace with the wonderful views..|My main reason for staying here over many years is for the hiking. With the bus stop right outside it provides all sorts of opportunities for day hikes from 10 to 12 KM through the mountains back to the hotel. you can do hikes back from Berchtesgaden, Bad Reichenhall, Konigsee, with round about hikes to Hintersee, Konigsee, Wmbachklmm, or Wmbachschloss.. (reference Kompass map 794) The little place provides outdoor opportunities for a life time! I hope you get a chance to enjoy...
