The Ritter Jorg is located in Sommerhausen in the Franconia wine growing region of Germany. We journeyed by car on our way to Southern Austria. This is a six hour journey from Calais and half way to our final destination. We have previously stayed in Sommmerhausen as my husband has family in this area. We would not have know of this beautiful area without his family's recommendation. The Ritter Jorg is well located in this small medieval town. It has it's own car park to the rear of the property. We had a double room on the first floor with a lovely balcony in the sun. The shower room was small but adequate with a strong flow of hot water from the Grohe rain shower head. We ate in the hotel restaurant which is not usually open on Mondays out of the high season. We chose slow cooked shoulder of pork and there is a choice of a small portion or larger portion. My husband said we should go for the larger portion as it was only 2 euros more. Needless to say the plate was overflowing with very tasty food and far more than we could manage. We did not realise that on our arrival day it was a public holiday in Germany and unusual temperatures of 35c. We discovered that on public holidays commercial vehicles are banned from traveling on the road which certainly made our journey easier. Behind the hotel is the town square and on this evening to celebrate Whitsun Monday there was a live music event playing popular music by a local band. Table and chairs were provided by the local hostelries who provided local wine, beer and food. Sommerhausen is located along the river Main providing walking and cycling opportunities. We paid a visit to our favourite wine merchant Ernst Gebhardt who has a shop a very short walk from the hotel. Here we were able to sample the latest wines. Ernst is a very enthusiastic wine dealer with very good English. The wines, Red, White, Rose and a sparkling Red are exceedingly good with many medal winners. There was even one Red wine with an alcohol volume of 15.5 per cent.||The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Wireless internet access is available. We would not hesitate to stay here again. We made our booking directly through the hotel website...
Read moreWhen visiting the town we wanted somewhere for lunch, the menu and appearance of this restaurant pulled us in. Not disappointed at all, polite and friendly greeting from a young lady who seated us, table for 2, perhaps could have been a little further apart in current times, but do understand the needs of restaurants. Rules have changed in Germany for travel on transport so might feel more comfortable for people to have extra space eating indoors, we didn't have a big issue with the surroundings on this occasion. Food and drinks order taken punctualy by male waiter, again polite and respectful all the time without being over the top. We chose simple dishes of schnitzels, very good, very fresh and hot. Portion size very good and very well priced at under 14Eur. Good wine menu by glass or bottle, good choice of beers. All in all a good lunch was had, and customer volume was indicative of popularity, but not crowded. Certainly recommend and would return if...
Read moreNice older hotel at a reasonable price. Rooms are nice, although the double we had the first nice was small and was next to the entrance, The automatic door noise transmitted through the wall whenever some one went in or out. We requested a larger room and moved to the 2nd floor for a more satisfactory stay. Clean rooms with modern bath facilities. Breakfast was large with many selections. Great local breads, cheeses and meats. We would stay here again should we return to Sommerhausen. It was very busy as there was a celebration of the church over the weekend. Hotel has parking and this is very important as space is at a premium in this village. (This was October 2) parade with military uniforms (18th century is my guess), drums and band. After noon moved to the fest platz for wine and bratwurst. Wine serving was a newer wine in a .5 litre mug. This a very big wine growing region and the Schloss here is one of the...
