I recently visited Balaouro Restaurant in Kavala, and unfortunately, it was a thoroughly disappointing experience. While the setting initially seemed promising, everything quickly went downhill.
The service was frustratingly inattentive. Despite the restaurant not being overly busy, the waitstaff seemed entirely disinterested in acknowledging our presence. We were left waiting far too long just to place our order, and even then, the level of service was severely lacking.
The food itself was another letdown. Not only was the quality far below expectations, but the dishes didn’t even taste fresh. In a seaside town like Kavala, one would expect seafood to be the highlight of the meal, but what we were served was bland, poorly cooked, and gave the distinct impression that freshness was not a priority here.
Adding to the overall discomfort was the constant disturbance from people trying to sell various items. Every few minutes, someone would approach our table, and it became nearly impossible to enjoy what little ambiance the restaurant had. Even politely declining wasn’t enough to deter them, and they would linger far longer than acceptable.
Lastly, the atmosphere was further marred by the presence of individuals who seemed more interested in loitering than dining, making the entire experience feel uncomfortable and far from relaxing.
In summary, Balaouro failed to deliver on every front, from the poor service to the disappointing food and intrusive atmosphere. It was a total disappointment, and I cannot recommend it to anyone looking for a pleasant...
Read moreBalaouro Restaurant is an absolutely charming seaside spot in Kavala. We had made a reservation in advance, and they kindly reserved a lovely table close to the water for us — the view and atmosphere were just perfect.
I would honestly recommend every dish on the menu. Everything we ordered was incredibly fresh and flavorful. The variety of fish and meze was impressive. A standout for me was the stuffed vine leaves (sarmale) — so tender and delicious, they practically melted in the mouth. The zucchini fritters, calamari, and salad were also highlights. Don’t miss out on the grilled cheese either!
The house wine was surprisingly good, and for two people, we left absolutely full and satisfied — and all for just €40, which is incredible value for the quality and service.
The staff were warm, attentive, and very professional. There were also Turkish-speaking staff who were especially helpful and welcoming. The complimentary ice cream at the end was such a sweet touch.
All in all, a wonderful dining experience — great food, excellent service, beautiful location, and unbeatable prices. Highly...
Read moreCozy taverna right on the shore in the small fishing port. Authentic greek food at decent prices. I really liked the octopus meatballs, the fried zucchini and buyurdi. Akso fresh white fish wonderful grilled. Mussels saganaki has feta cheese sprinkled only and not baked in the sauce, but I was happy that mussels had no shells. The waiters were very kind and made us feel at home. Very friendly atmosphere. For me, Balaouro was certainly the best taverna in the area. We also tried Savvas - too many tables, long time to wait, nothing special. We wanted to go to Meltemi but we renounced, it looked like in Star Wars - on the tables were tablets instead of menus and the waitress looked like Darth Vader. We were afraid of not receiving pills with a taste of kalamarakia so we left. I want to be treated like a tourist on vacation and not like a...
