Hi, can I start by saying I love Greece, the Greek people and their tavernas and most beach bars, but sadly the experience of this place left me very disappointed.
Firstly, 30 Euros for two beds and a parasol is quite steep. I have paid similar prices before, but in swish, well run beach bars with great facilities. Here, this basically bought you a day of the beds on an otherwise public beach and nothing by way of service. My partner had hurt her back and needed a bed so we went ahead with them..
There is a button on the parasol to call for staff for orders and about an hour in I used it and tbf the woman working the taverna floor came straight over, but she was looking agitated for some reason.
I asked for two beers but she immediately turned away and went to speak to a Greek couple nearby and then retreated to the Taverna. I could see her stood at the front by the beach, but after waiting for @ 25 minutes and her not coming back, we went to the Taverna and took a seat near her. She completely ignored us for at least another ten minutes until I stopped her walking by (and looking anywhere but at us) and asked for a menu.
She gave us two menus but then never came back to see if we wanted to order something and again, after some length of time I had to ask her to take our order. In all this time she was just stood at the end of the taverna looking out at the beach, not serving people.
One positive was that the food I saw brought out looked good.
I was polite and smiley and did try to use my admittedly limited Greek, but the woman was very rude from the outset and provided a very poor / non-existent service which definitely tainted our day on Kanala Beach.
I'm pleased to say that this was otherwise so unlike most of my experiences in Kythnos and other islands I have visited over the years.
UPDATE - the owner has replied and said "we do not have a young girl here" but I made no mention of a young girl, I used the term 'woman'. The person that was rude and ignorant was a woman of @40 years of age, slim with a thin face and light brown, collar length hair. There was a young boy of @10 years of age helping in the restaurant who I believe was her son, so it is possible the woman is the owner or the manager (she certainly seemed to...
Read moreUnassuming Great taverna/cafe right on the beach. We had a Greek salad, fried cheese-balls supposedly from local cheese, roasted sea bream (tsipoura in Greek) and a bottle of water.
Everything was super fresh tasting and very delicious. Simple Greek food done just right.
The cheese balls had a thin crispy outer layer and were nice and very soft on the inside, but not stringy or gooey. Amazing flavour with just a hint of sourness/freshness to the cheese.
The salad consisted of the usual ingredients (tomatoes, cucumber, feta, olives, red onion, oregano, olive oil and vinegar) all of it fresh and tasty.
The fish was priced by weight (we got a 400 gram fish) and was freshly caught. It was served whole (opened up for easy eating) with plenty of lemon on the side. The taste was fresh with no hint of fishiness at all, and had a nice roasted/grilled flavour. Best fish I've had in quite a while. I'd say it was cooked more or less to perfection.
All in all, the portions were big and the price reasonable. Between the two of us (my wife and I), we couldn't finish everything. We paid € 24.50 + tip. Money very well spent!
This place is mentioned twice on Google maps - also under the English name Almyra Cafe Tavern. It's the same...
Read moreA beautiful spot to relax and enjoy a swim by the sea. Even though it was early May, the beach bar was open and welcoming, which was a pleasant surprise. The owner was very kind and gladly gave us helpful information about the island, it’s always great to feel that kind of hospitality.
We ordered two coffees, they could have been better, but considering the time of year and location, it’s totally understandable. This certainly doesn’t take away from the overall experience, which was very positive.
We’re definitely planning to come back, especially to try the Mediterranean dishes they offer.
Absolutely...
