I spend a lot of time in Greece. I have a lot of Greek friends. I eat a lot of Greek and consider it to frankly be the best cuisine on the planet. Sorry Italy, your food is also amazing, but Greece just nudged it in the savoury section. We can have another contest for dessert.
In all my time eating Greek, in Rhodes, Lesvos, Crete, and even by Greeks in the UK I have never had a bad meal. Greeks can cook, and they take great pride in it.
That said....this is hands down, far and away, the best food to ever cross my inexplicably blessed lips. I was actually pleasantly shocked, I went in expecting a good meal but this was on another level.
We had cheese balls, home made sausages, (again, sorry Ireland, you were the favourites but you've been relegated to an honourable second place), courgette fritters, tomato fritters, chicken souvlaki, bifteki meatballs, extra fries and black olive dip and bread. I don't even like olives but I devoured that dip. It was finished off with again, pleasant surprise and gusto.
The meal was finished with complementary honeydew and watermelon. We also had cokes and a beer. The grand total for 3 people...€65.
In summary, the best meal I've ever had in Greece at an absolute bargain price. Expect more photos as I'd wager my pension on the nearly adult kids chasing me to take them back.
Update We have been back and tried the chicken pie and lemon cheesecake. They are to die for. The pie is soft, tender, and absolutely packed with filling. They're called Mamma's pies and fair to say, if my mamma cooked like this I'd have...
Read morePetrokofino Cretan Restaurant is truly a hidden gem and one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in Crete. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with an incredibly warm and genuine welcome. The staff here are not just friendly – they are exceptionally kind and attentive, creating an atmosphere that immediately makes you feel at home.
Now, the food… absolutely first class. Everything we ordered was full of authentic Cretan flavor and clearly prepared with love and care. Our absolute favorite was the Greek broad beans served with caramelized onions – a unique and perfectly balanced dish that completely stole the show. The Horta was fresh and vibrant, bursting with natural flavor, and the Saganaki cheese was golden, crispy on the outside and meltingly delicious inside.
It’s rare to find a place where both the food and service are outstanding, but Petrokofino nails it. We’re already looking forward to coming back, and we highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to taste real Cretan cuisine in a warm, authentic setting. Don’t miss it – it’s...
Read moreSmall family owned and run tavern in the small village of Mixorouma Crete. The family serves the food and takes orders, they are friendly and very polite. You need to book in advance as it is a smal tavern with about 10 tables and it is very popular. About the food now, the dishes are tasty and well presented, personally I think it's overated, portions are quite small except for a couple of plates e.g Cretan Salad, pork souvlaki. The prices are a bit high for the quality and quantity served. My partner and I tried the Cretan salad, tiropitari pie, Anthi, Chicken in tomato sauce, Spaghetti Bolognaise 🍝 and for desert the Baklava with Ice Cream. It sounds like a lot of food, that's what we thought 🤔, but it was just enough 😏. The food was tasty but nothing special. The cost per person was 30€. The atmosphere was pleasant, rustic, and a bit loud. Try it out for yourselves if it's on your way, I would not make a detour for it though 😀. See the photos of...
