The food at this restaurant was truly exceptional. From the moment we arrived, I was impressed by their unique approach, they invited us to come closer to the kitchen, where they showcased each dish from the menu, one by one. It was a wonderful way to start the experience, giving us a sense of the care and craftsmanship that goes into every plate.
The portions were incredibly generous, and each dish was beautifully presented. I tried a pork dish that was unbelievably tender; every bite was full of flavor, and it quickly became a favorite. The aubergine salad was another highlight fresh, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. The balance of tastes and textures in every dish showed a real dedication to quality and creativity.
What truly enhanced the experience was the unique interior decor of the restaurant. The walls were adorned with old, ancient tools used for farming and cooking, all neatly placed to create a rustic and authentic atmosphere. These pieces of history were thoughtfully integrated into the design, adding a sense of charm and character that complemented the restaurant's culinary offerings perfectly.
The combination of the delightful atmosphere, unique decor, attentive service, and outstanding food made for an unforgettable dining experience. This place truly stands out and is definitely...
Read moreI recently visited this wonderful traditional tavern in Spili, south of Rethymno, and the experience was simply magical. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere made me feel right at home. The space, though not very large, was warm and welcoming, and the service was absolutely impeccable. The staff were kind, smiling, and attentive, with a genuine desire to ensure that every guest had a great time.
The food was an experience in itself. There was no menu—every day, the owners prepare around 15 different homemade dishes, cooked with love in ovens, pots, and traditional clay baking pans. You simply choose from what’s available, and they bring it straight to your table, making you feel like you’re at a family Sunday lunch in Crete. The flavors were outstanding—rich yet well-balanced, without unnecessary heaviness, and the portions were generous, far beyond the usual restaurant servings. The salads, made with fresh seasonal greens, were among the best I’ve ever had.
Another thoughtful touch is that the place is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs, showing their attention to all guests’ comfort.
If I could give more than five stars, I absolutely would. The hospitality, the authentic flavors, and the overall experience make this a place I will definitely...
Read moreThey have a good selection of traditional Cretan (and Greek in general) dishes and the place has a very nice folk aesthetic. The food was extraordinary and I can say this as a native Greek who knows what traditional Greek food should taste like. Also the staff was very friendly and the service was very quick.
Please note that you may need a reservation!
Addressing some of the low rating reviews:
Truth is, I was a bit reluctant after reading some of them, but not everyone has the same expectations from their experiences. Yes, there is no menu but the fact that they serve Greek food most tourists are not familiar with and they take you to see it, is probably the best way to understand how it is cooked and what you will be getting into, instead of reading it off of a piece of paper.
As for the prices, it depends on the dish but if you are concerned, you may simply ask. For us, 2 people, we ordered 1 greek salad, stuffed zucchini flowers, the black swine roast and 2 cokes and paid 37€; we thought the bill was fairly decent!
Yes, the roast alone cost 20€ BUT, to their defense: the portion was HUGE (was supposed to be the main course for 1 of us and we ended up splitting it) the piggy was raised by the owners, making it the most quality meat...
