Semeli Restaurant - Cafe — Restaurant in Municipality of Archane - Asterousia

We came here at the end of our two week stay in Crete and we had dinner every night in plenty of different places and we can say with absolute certainty that this was by far the best food we had. Every course was delicious and made with obvious love and expertise. We had three dishes and all three of them were simply impeccable. Most places in Crete offer good food and each establishment wants to convince you that they offer the "true" Cretan traditional food. And all of them generally offer quality food. But Semeli elevates it to a true art form where the food melts in your mouth and you don't want to finish your plate because the food is just too good. There were plenty of options for us as vegetarians, but we assume the same goes for their other (meat) dishes. Hats off to the cook. Service was friendly and honest and not of the overly genteel variety you get in lots of places. To top it off we received a free fruit plate and free raki. 5 star place. Cannot recommend this any higher. Tip: ideal in combination with a wine tasting experience at the lovely Stalionou winery just a couple of kilometers further up the road. We wanted a nice place to sit and have a drink in the heat, and came across this café. Our experience here was flawless. The owner/waitress served us with a warm smile and a very nice attitude. The food was flawless, tasty, and overall really good. We ordered grilled mushrooms, Hand-cut chips, tzatziki, and pita bread. Everything tasted really good, and we enjoyed everything. We also had fresh orange juice, coffees, and their homemade lemonade, which were also really good. The atmosphere was very nice and calm. Such a nice surprise! We stopped here as it was in our way towards our accommodation, and what a great choice was to do that! The service is fast, coffee is great, and the cook/chef is an awesome guy! Now, coming back to the food itself: for me, it felt like going back in time and being home, at a lunch that my mother cooked! The food was super delicious!
