A Hidden Gem of Authentic Greek Cuisine – Mpakalotaverna
We had an absolutely delightful dinner at Mpakalotaverna. Every single dish we tried was flavourful, authentic, and clearly made with care and quality ingredients. Here's a breakdown of what we enjoyed:
🧀 Saganaki (Fried Cheese)
The grilled cheese was golden and crisp on the outside while remaining gooey and tender inside. Lightly seasoned with herbs, it was rich without being overwhelming. A perfect way to start the meal.
🍟 Fries with Herbs
The fries were thick-cut and beautifully fried – crispy on the outside, fluffy inside, and dusted with a generous pinch of herbs. An addictive and comforting classic.
🍃 Dolmadakia (Stuffed Vine Leaves)
These were some of the best I've had. The vine leaves were soft and tender, stuffed with a fragrant rice filling and topped with a tangy lemon sauce and fresh dill that balanced everything out perfectly.
🍆 Chickpeas with Aubergine in Tomato Sauce
This dish was hearty and warming – the chickpeas were cooked just right, and the aubergine added a velvety texture. The sauce was rich, slightly sweet, and packed with Mediterranean flavour.
🍝 Pasta with Shredded Cheese & Smoked Meat
This dish surprised us – wide noodles paired with juicy chunks of smoked meat and covered in a generous layer of shredded cheese with a touch of paprika. Comforting and indulgent, it’s a must-try if you enjoy bold, smoky flavours.
Service: Friendly, welcoming, and efficient. We felt well looked after from the moment we arrived.
Ambience: Cosy, rustic, and relaxed. The setting complements the traditional Greek food wonderfully.
If you’re in the area and craving authentic Greek home cooking with a creative touch, I highly recommend Mpakalotaverna. We’ll definitely be coming back to explore more...
Read moreArrogant service but very good food.
My 2nd time at Moakalogatos on Tuesday 5th September. Very happy with the food, we had the pork tigania, pantsetes, tyrokafteri and red wine. Everything was lovely apart from the tomato balls which we exchanged for the bean stew
The service started of as indifferent and ended up in arrogant and rude. We requested to exchanged the tomato balls because there was a tiny amount of tomatoe and feta but the response of the waiter with the short hair was anything but accommodating or empathetic. The same thing happened when we asked about a small discrepancy with the wine charge. Th waiter with the long hair tried to resolve the issue but the other waiter gave us a cold answer for a mistake that was clearly his and turned his back and left.
It is not that we paid 49€ just for two people but we expecting the service to be nicer and warmer.
I will not dine there again if...
Read moreFirst meal in Greece, stumbled upon this place and though it was somewhat early for dinner by Greek standards there were quite a few patrons. The waiter spoke perfect English and was very accommodating. Food was plentiful and delicious, first starting us out with bread basket and jug if water. We ordered Greek salad, a cheese spread, a ration of pork chops, and a 1/2 liter of chilled rose. Wow, wow, wow. We have been in Europe 3 weeks and this was our best meal to date. Since we are staying nearby for a week, we will be dining there again. Having lived in Greece for a few yrs in the 90’s, this was indeed the real thing. Price was as the...
