Based on the reviews , I visited Barbantonis on a weekday afternoon for lunch.
Atmosphere wise, it is not much. Just a bunch of tables and chairs facing a village street, if you sit outside.
Not much different to any coffee shop in rural Greece.
The waiter informed me that some of the items on the menu were not available, after I had ordered them.
So, I settled for lamb with artichokes, a Greek salad and cheese kaltsounia (pies).
The salad was good, fresh vegetables and a generous serving. The kaltsounia were so and so.
My lamb serving was not OK. It seems that all that was left to serve was bones and fat, and that it was difficult to fork out any meat from that dish.
I politely told the waiter that my main plate was not what I expected, and he replied that this is how lamb is.
As if a Greek guy tries lamb at his 60s for the first time.
No offer to replace the plate with something else or anything.
I realize that other reviewers really enjoyed the experience, but as far as I am concerned, this has been one of very rare fails with Cretan...
Read moreStopped here on our last day in Crete, on our way to the airport. A lovely little traditional place in a quiet village setting. We got here at opening time and the place soon filled up (mainly with locals). Great menu selection and the man serving us was very friendly and helpful going through the different options. As we gave our order he warned us about ordering too much, and we're glad he did as the portions where huge! The baked feta in particular which we would usually order 1 each, 2 portions here where enough for the 6 of us to share. We were recommended Dakos (rusks with mithra cheese, olive oil and tomatoes). All of the dishes where very good, fresh, big portions and tasty, and not to mention great value for money. If you're nearby and want big portions of authentic greek food make sure you try this place. Outside the restaurant there was a small square where you can park...
Read moreThe price was very reasonable at only 20 euros, and the portion size was generous. I would have given it a 5-star rating, but there were a lot of flies in the area and two of them landed on my plate while I was eating. This made me lose my appetite somewhat. The fries was not cooked very well. When I ordered, I asked for the dessert menu and showed them a picture of a flan I saw from Google reviews. They said that it was available for dessert, so I assumed that it would be served complimentary with the raki. However, we waited after we finished eating and...
