Koubara is simply magnificent!
My husband and I were roaming Ios with about an hour before having to catch a ferry back to Paros. I have anxiety and potential for sea sickness so I always feel apprehensive before getting on any water craft. We were exploring the area where Koubara is and decided to sit there for the shade, rather than in our micro euro rental car.
We sat down and the first wonderful part was the view. Next was the comfortable chairs and the ability to get just water and coke for refreshment without issue/judgement (I cannot eat before getting on a ferry). Then a miracle transpired.
For the first time in years I was able to sink into an almost euphoric state, which would have been previously thought impossible with an impending dreaded ferry ride. To clarify, the views are wonderful from the ferries, as is the general experience. I only wish I could enjoy them more, if only my body would cooperate. As for the euphoria at Koubara, the view to the water, the shade, the beverage coupled with the vibe made for a complete - forget all your troubles - package.
The vibe was made possible by the wait staff being friendly but allowing us our space to zone out ... and then there was the pertinent ingredient...the music. Never have I been so entranced so rapidly, and under such conditions as worrying about my upcoming travels, thanks to Koubara and their astute decision to play Brian Grey.
I hadn't heard of Brian Grey and his genre is not one I gravitate toward in my daily life, but the sweet bliss of his jazz guitar record - I later looked up and found out his album which was playing was just released in 2021!! - was the unbeatable, unforgettable and the essential icing on the cake. His music and that location allowed me drift into an oasis as easily and readily as the gentle and consistent lapping of the tides on the shores of the gorgeous island where Koubara sits. My husband was equally carried away in this moment of bliss, a memory we will share for years to come.
Thank you Koubara, thank you Ios, and thank you Brian Grey. Thank you all for that enigmatic and rapturous experience. I suspect the food to be as divine as that moment was and will definitely endeavor to partake in it should we find ourselves disembarking on the shores of Ios in the...

If I could give zero stars, I would. This establishment is not just disorganized — it’s dishonest, exploitative, and downright hostile.
We arrived at the beach and, as is typical, paid cash to the beach attendants for our sunbeds. They accepted the payment with no issue and brought us a menu, from which we ordered beers. All seemed normal.
About 15 minutes later, the same staff came back and claimed they had no record of us paying. According to them, this was the first time they were seeing us — as if we had just magically appeared on their chairs with drinks from nowhere. When we calmly explained that we had already paid, they demanded a receipt — one that, of course, they never gave us.
I firmly reiterated that we had indeed paid, and the staff went to get the owner. If you’re hoping the management here brings clarity or professionalism — brace yourself. The owner stormed over, immediately confrontational. She started with a question, but cut me off mid-sentence and began yelling before I could answer. Her tone was aggressive and accusatory, not even pretending to consider the possibility of staff error.
Then she claimed she had already “checked the cameras” and said there was no recording of us paying. I replied, calmly, that I found that very hard to believe — and suggested we go look at the footage together.
Reluctantly, she agreed. And surprise, surprise: there we were on camera — clearly paying cash to her staff, who promptly pocketed the money.
No apology. No accountability. Just an awkward silence and a clear implication: this wasn’t the first time something like this had happened, just the first time someone called it out and proved it.
This is not just a poorly run beach bar — it’s a scam dressed up as a business. You risk being double-charged, gaslit, and publicly berated just for standing up for yourself.
My advice: Go elsewhere. There are plenty of honest, respectful, and transparent places to enjoy the beach. This one deserves to be avoided...
Read moreThis place is all show and no substance. It looks stunning from the outside, but step in and you’ll quickly realise the staff couldn’t care less if you’re there or not.
Online they claim to open at 12, but when we arrived at 12 we were told we were “wrong” and would need to wait 15–30 minutes. If Google isn't reflect your hours properly, maybe don’t blame your customers for it.
We came as a group of 15 (potentially growing to 30), which you’d think any restaurant would welcome, but the staff treated us like we were an inconvenience. The place was completely EMPTY when we arrived, and when we left after spending a huge amount of money, there were only 4 extra patrons (who I think were family). Yet the vibe the entire time serving us was that we were just a pure burden.
To make it worse, they seemed more interested in nitpicking us than actually doing their job. We put our beach bags in on area, which I immediately tidied when asked, only to have the waiter return 10 minutes later and talk down to me — this time rolling his eyes when I explained people were actually sitting at the table, had just ordered food and were going for a quick dip in the ocean. No apology, just walked off annoyed.
I wouldn't even say the food was good... it was overpriced, and nowhere near the standard you’d expect from a place trying to pass itself off as premium. Combined with the hostile service, it felt like the kind of place where you wonder if they’d happily spit in your meal.
Overall, it was hands down the WORST dining experience of our trip. A restaurant in a location this good should be thriving, but with staff this rude and food this average, it’s honestly not worth your time, money, or energy.
Save yourself the disappointment and go literally anywhere else like Erego Restaurant...
