The Thalassaki Giannakopoulou Vasiliki Restaurant Kalamata — Restaurant in Municipality of Kalamata

I rarely give reviews and I even tend not to give bad reviews in particular because I do not want to do harm to people’s business due to potentially a single instance of bad experience that I have. But this place simply deserves a review.

By far in the Kalamata Area this was the worst food (and I’m traveling here every year).

Overcooked green beans, okras, gemista, rather bland taste except for the very basics like agurotomato salad and fries. Portions are very small on all dishes - not Greek at all (and I’m not exaggerating - when I mean small im not comparing to the sometimes very large portions in some restaurants but to a normal size). For example very small tzatziki and not spicy and almost no cucumber it it. Souvlaki seemed very poor in quality.

In the end I even had to argue with the waiter / owner regarding the payment. We didn’t order any bread and didn’t touch it. He still wanted us to pay for it (4,80€ for 4 people). Arguing it was mandatory for the service, cutlery, water etc. I wouldn’t mind to pay that if the menu said so or he would have informed us. Or even if he would have been nice when saying so. But the waiter‘s behavior was horrible. The menu doesn’t say so anywhere not did he state this. I know that no place mandatorily charges you bread. And really there was no service except for bringing the food, cutlery and some water (at least). No free dessert as customary in almost all restaurants in Greece (not giving the review due to this but just mentioning).

Because he was starting an argument with me the woman in the kitchen send the waiter away. They then miscalculated the deduction of the bread from the calculated price (after I had to raise my voice because I didn’t want to be treated like an idiot) and she wanted me to pay a higher price so I had to recalculate everything not trusting them. I then told her the correct price (which was their initial calculation minus the bread - so at least that was accurate), she typed it into the banking machine, we payed and left with a bad feeling.

This place gets two stars only for the view by the beach and because it is there and offers some food.

But I will never visit again and can only strongly discourage from going. After reading some of the bad reviews I can understand the frustration with this place as the people are simply not nice to deal with. I guess they live off the good location and the people downstairs coming from the beach.

Watch out for this restaurant, it’s a scam. Typical story - we ordered a fish - in menu price as for the dish - and when it comes to paying it turns out fish is 60 eur instead of 15 eur, because they weight it and price in menu is for 50g or 100g - who knows, it’s not written anywhere and you are not informed how much you are gonna eat. As mentioned, we were not informed about the weight neither while ordering, nor serving and paying. I guess we were lucky there wasn’t any 4-5 kg fish in there that day because we would pay 600 eur instead. I really regret I haven’t left the place without paying for this fish. The waiter was speaking English quite well but decided not to share with us this little detail even though he told us too many other unnecassary things. We where met with a grim face that made us feel all but welcome. Maybe he will lighten up after a talk we thought but no luck and it seems to be a culture thing there. When I tried to explain to him that I have some allergies like gluten he seemed to become even more annoyed and clearly wanted to be somewhere else. The communication went as expected and I did not get what I tried to explain to him. The inside of the glasses had a very unpleasant smell so I didn't use them. The well done tenderloin - I wasn't asked - was okay and the sardines where delicious.
