A local delicious traditional Greek restaurant not to be missed!!

We were looking for a real authentic Greek food experience in Crete after having tried many different Greek restaurants. Next door was Gramboussa restaurant which was so busy with a huge line to wait and after reading great reviews we decided to try this restaurant Abelos.

Entree was Greek salad and pita with tzatziki which was so delicious, followed by the pork and chicken souvlaki on the stick pita wraps. Meat was tender and juicy.

Everything tasted authentic and was so tasty. We had 2 desserts which were generously sized - baklava and Galaktoboureko. So delicious the photos here don’t do it justice!! The reviews here speak for itself, don’t be disarmed by this restaurant with how busy next door is, this place is a real gem.

I simply don't understand the good reviews. We were a group of 10, which included kids, and ordered a variety of different dishes. With the exception of the lamb and chicken in pita sandwiches, all dishes were burned, covered with a thick layer of charcoal. One of our friends complained about it and was told that this is how it is. We had been in Greece for almost a week and have never come across anything so badly grilled. My chop lambs, besides being pretty much like charcoal pieces, were mostly bones, there was barely meat attached to the bones to be eaten. We optet to have lunch here in a very cozy and authentic atmosphere in the shade of an old olive tree instead of the extremly crowded Grambousa . The tables and everything is exactly what ypu wpuld expect from a traditional tavern in Greece, but the food mediocre at most, i had some stomach ache afterwards. The kitchen is really dirty and smells bad, as well as the toilet.

Too bad that a place with so much potential and a family business don't do more to give a better...
