After fifty-eight days of wandering through Greece, of dodging tourist traps and enduring spite gyros, of paying Tuscan prices for gas station cheese plates, I found this place. Two days before I depart. Of course.
Ammoudia sits on a farm within walking distance of Kalantos beach, a stretch of coast that tourism forgot, which means it still remembers what it's supposed to be. The taverna is nothing more than tables under open sky, the kind of setup that either delivers transcendence or disaster with no middle ground.
The tzatziki is perfect, not the watery approximation served to cruise ship passengers near the port town, but the real thing, thick enough to stand a spoon in. The Greek salad arrives with enough feta to constitute its own small dairy operation. The saganaki arrives without fanfare but with the kind of honesty that makes you remember why you started traveling in the first place.
The sausage comes with a story: made here, from their animals, with their hands. The owner recommends the sausage because he made it. This is not marketing, this is pride. There is a difference.
Bring cash. They take cards, but an electronic transaction here feels like paying Hemingway with a Venmo request. Some experiences deserve the weight of actual currency changing hands.
Fifty-eight days to find the Greece that still exists. Worth every disappointment...

This family-run tavern truly stands out—not just for its delicious food, but for the heartfelt hospitality that makes you feel like part of the family the moment you arrive.
We started with a classic Greek salad, but it was far from ordinary—the freshness of the vegetables and the rich, creamy local cheese made it one of the best we've had anywhere in Greece. We also enjoyed eggs prepared to perfection, and then came the stars of the meal: the lamb chops and pork steak. Both were grilled with care and full of flavor, using what can only be described as the best-quality ingredients you’ll find on the island.
What truly made this meal unforgettable was the warmth and kindness of the family who runs Ammoudia. Their genuine smiles, attentive service, and pride in what they do created a welcoming atmosphere that made us want to stay for hours.
If you're in Naxos and looking for authentic food made with love, this is the place. Don’t miss it—you’ll leave full, happy, and already planning...
Read moreA little hidden gem in Naxos. Vassili is a local farmer who is also the harbourmaster of the loca Marina. He has just opened this lovely taverna with his three sons and wife, hence the very few reviews. They prepare exclusively the food they produce in their farm: lamb, pork, chicken, eggs, potatoes, and their delicious soft cheese. Little English, but big hearts and smiles. The terrace is airy and shady, and at night it is lit up with soft lights. Beautiful views. Brand new and sparkling clean toilets. Farm animals are nearby, so expect a few flies. They just started operating so they are still facing some small organisational issues. However we were blown away by the amazing hospitality of this little family and our patience was more than rewarded. We highly...
