Stumbled across Foros by accident, in search of scratching a Mousaka-itch after a sweltering ride up into the foothills, this gorgeous Taverna was busy with diners and ticked the Mousaka box so we opted in. Couldn't have been more impressed / pleasantly surprised; Thomas and the waiting staff were warm and humbling hosts and the food itself was traditional, fresh, savoury, umptuous and plentiful (we had to ask for boxes to take away!).
Cooked with love and a rustic flare for deep, rich flavours typically weilded by aged grandmamas. Highlights were, of course, the Mousaka though the Tsigareli (seasonal greens stewed in a moreish, auburn-tomato and onion sauce) was something we're desperate to recreate at home as well as one of the specials of the day; "Spaghetti with Chicken cooked in a Lemon Sauce"... I expected a light, lemony chicken linguine but instead we were presented with an ostrich-sized, broiled chicken leg atop an enormous plate of spaghetti that had been cooked in the remnant pan juices (and some lemon) of that outrageous chicken. We were stuffed by the end of our starters but couldn't help but scoff as much of our mains before conceding defeat.. though just as I was negotating a homemade Apple Cake and Fig Ice Cream dessert with my partner, Thomas appeared and announced that he was treating us to a slice of Walnut Cake and Vanilla Ice Cream, on the house (as if he'd heard my desires, telepathicly) which was such a lovely gesture and such a gorgeous way to end the experience let alone the walnut cake being one of the most moist and delicious cakes I've ever had.
A must...
Read moreWe visited ‘O Foros’ because of its many positive reviews and the promise of traditional Greek food – a 20-minute drive from Kassiopi that, in hindsight, we could have skipped. The small mountain village is peaceful and surrounded by nature, and while the welcome raki was a nice touch, things quickly went downhill from there. The starter – fried zucchini balls – was bland and forgettable. My moussaka was definitely not freshly made; it had clearly been reheated, with a disappointing taste and a strange composition: half béchamel, half a dull mix of minced meat and eggplant. My girlfriend’s gyros was equally uninspired – likely also just reheated.
After the meal, we were left with an unpleasantly heavy feeling and constant burping – clear signs that the food was anything but fresh. We couldn’t finish our plates and ended up offering the leftovers to the many stray cats wandering around the village.
Beautiful location, but a culinary letdown. Had we read an honest review like this beforehand, we definitely...
Read moreJust go. This is the most exciting place I have eaten on this island simply because it is still a family owned restaurant where the grandma is doing the cooking. We had a very nice chat with Alex the owner who recommended to us 2 main dishes and 2 starters. I cannot even describe how tasty it was. Imagine coming home from a long trip and you are served hot plate made from your grandmother who has been cooking since early morning. It tastes comforting, like home, like family. From all of the restaurants and tavernes in the North side that I visited, I can say that this is the most authentic to real life Greek home. Do not expect fish, but variety of meat and vegetables, oh and homemade ice cream (like in the old days). Keep up the warmth and...
