Το Καπηλειό Traditional Meze Taverna — Restaurant in Municipality of Rethymnon

Was recommended this restaurant by owner of our villa. Tucked away in the mountains in a small village. Very traditional Greek authentic taverna. No menu but they tell you what they have on the day. We sat outside on the street and there was no issue with cars etc. the food was amazing we had a selection of starters and main dishes between the 5 of us. The food is plentiful and we probably could of got away with ordering 1 less, anyway we didn’t leave anything! White wine was fine. Only thing which was a little disappointing was service although waitress was friendly enough we didn’t experience the hospitality that we had seen in others reviews, no general chit chat and we weren’t approached to see if we were ok or if we wanted more drinks etc it felt we were just left. There appeared to be a lot of family and friends around that turned up and all their attention was with them which was a shame. However certainly couldn’t fault the good which was very good...

If youre in Crete PLEASE dont pass this amazing establishment up. Was driving back from the southern side of Crete to Rethimno and i decided to go a different route than usual and stumbled upon this beautiful restaurant. As someone that generally dislikes the heavily traveled tourist destinations of greece this was right in my alley. Every plate was cooked to perfection, the server and her little helper were so good to us it felt like hanging out with old friends. By far the best food and service i have ever had in greece. We found this family run taverna - Marie the chef and her family serve genuinely authentic food - she told us she learnt to cook from her mother - there’s no menu they tell you the menu that’s cooked fresh that day - plenty of choice - nicely slow cooked meats, fresh salad, the Zucchini filled flowers baked in the oven were unreal and Pork in red wine, stuffed vegetables, moussaka, with a jug of local white wine - red available too!!!
