Greek food in a beautiful garden setting
We had an incredible dinner at Taverna Zorbas Pigi – easily one of the highlights of our trip to Crete. The atmosphere is peaceful and charming, with outdoor seating under a huge, shady tree that makes it feel like you’re dining in someone’s backyard.
The food was absolutely delicious. The standout dish was the pork in oregano sauce – incredibly tender and flavorful, definitely a must-try! We also ordered: • Spicy meatballs (keftedes) with fries – juicy and rich in flavor • Fresh Greek salad with feta, olives, and crunchy barley rusks • Grilled zucchini with olive oil and herbs • Lamb chops – smoky and perfectly grilled • Tzatziki – creamy, garlicky, and refreshing • Dolma (stuffed vine leaves) – soft and well-seasoned • Plus warm pita bread and a few cold drinks to round it out.
The service was outstanding – the staff were warm, attentive, and great at suggesting dishes. Everything felt fresh and made with care.

Read moreWe visited this place two times during our 9 days we spent on Crete (once with 6 and once with 9 people) and I can't even pick which of the two times was better. The place is beautiful, all tables are located under a huge and very old olive tree. The menu is definitely more on the carnivore side but there are also a few fantastic vegetarian options for the starters (the Fava and Saganaki were phenomenal). My favorite was definitely the lamb and I usually don't like lamb a lot normally. Since the worst review here is crying about changing service personnel: You get your food faster and fresher this way so I don't see a problem here – go to an expensive 5-star restaurant if you want a dedicated waiter for yourself. The service was friendly, fast and very authentic and reflected the greek warmness perfectly. More than a clear recommendation...
Read moreZorbas Taverna is one of two traditional Cretan tavernas in Pigi. We ate there twice for dinner, and they opened for breakfast on our last morning in the village.
Doxa was our beautiful waiter who greeted us with a big smile whenever we saw her.
The memorable dish from Zorbas was the slow cooked pork with oregano. It was slow cooked in a ceramic pot and was so delicious. BUT our other dishes were so good too. We had the apaki one night which is a Cretian cured pork meat with smoky flavours. It was lightly pan fried. The green beans cooked in tomato and olive oil were yummy. The fava was rustic and fantastic.
Our breakfast was a little feast of mezze salad, omelette, yoghurt and...
