Kalavarda Sea House — Restaurant in Municipality of Rhodes

Typically, I don’t leave reviews but this restaurant deserves an exception.

On the face of it, it serves very similar food to much of the Island, a family owned establishment with a menu full of fresh seafood and the Greek standards.

However, of all the restaurants we ate at on the island this was certainly the best. The food was consistently excellent (we visited 3 times) the seafood, fresh, clean and well cooked, the salad always made with perfectly ripe produce.

The view from the outside tables looks directly out to the ocean and the mountains in the background, perfect for a sunset evening.

The food aside, the real stand out here is Dimitri and the family that run the restaurant, from the moment you walk in you are made to feel welcome and valued as a customer. All the staff are really putting the effort in to make sure you have a perfect meal.

We travel extensively and usually eat out 4-5 nights a week and just felt that this restaurant was everything a good restaurant should be.

The food was basic but excellently cooked and presented, consistently, every time we went. The staff were wonderful, friendly and personably, the owner even bought us a drink and gave us complimentary deserts on our last night.

This is what a restaurant should be!! Keen, attentive service and simply food done very well.

To give you an idea of price, our last bill featured a large Greek Salad, a Baked Feta Starter, A Shrimp Dish, Calamari, a few beers, bottled water and desert and it came to about €45.

Main restaurant is not too bad, food is nice but you can tell it's summer season as the prices have gone up. "surf shack" part of the restaurant on the beach, avoid, the girl couldn't be bothered cleaning any of the tables, cigarette ash and full ashtrays left on the table, no tables cleaned, empty bottles, glasses cups left on tables (there are only 5 tables and she and a friend were using one of them). Guests were having to clear their own tables and leave things on the bar, which stayed there for a considerable amount of time. Best advice use main restaurant if the owner can be bothered to acknowledge you if you are not a Greek. But the main staff are a blessing and a credit to them, friendly, polite...

There are some places you keep going back to, just to check if they're still ok. This place has been fantastic for longer than I can remember. I think we started coming here back in 1996. They've never missed a beat. You can't go wrong with meze but if you like a bone or two in your fish, you should try the house speciality, fried bacalao (the Greek spelling is confusing to the tongue).
