Me and my boyfriend went for a dinner last evening, since the place was suggested to us by our friends. The atmosphere was ok, the service was very helpful, you could tell that they knew what theye were doing. The main dissappointment was the food itself which I will go in detail about further. So firstly, what we’ve ordered: bread, potatoes, lentil salad, beef with pasta and chicken meatballs. For the bread I couldn’t complain that much, it was served with a side of olive spread which was a nice touch. It lacked in salt though, which will be the main point of all the dishes, unfortunately. The bread itself was just fine, little dry, but ok. Then came the lentil salad with ham and cheese on top. Although, again, it didn’t have much salt it was actually very refreshing, given the ham and cheese. A solid 4/5. Potatoes were also a solid 4/5, the thing I really don’t understand is why are they are firstly fried and then baked? Greece is very well knows for it’s starchy potatoes, which would be perfect either only baked or only fried. That was, for me quite wierd and made the potatoes a bit too dry. But then again, these are details, because overall the dish was ok, might be better though. Then came slowly cooked beef with homemade pasta, kind of resembling italian gnocchi. The pasta and beef had a perfect texture, really top notch. What was lackingn was the salt. After asking the waiter to bring us some and adding it to the dish it automatically became much better. But still, not making the tomato sauce salty enough made me ask a lot of questions. All of them were answered when the final dish came - chicken meatballs, served with tomatoes and yougurth. Again, almost no salt, which was such a pity, cause both tomato and yogurth, since naturally sour, need salt, a lot of it. But I guess the worst part was that the meat itself was not only tasteless but also very dry. It’s pretty simple to dry chicken out, I get it, but there are plenty ways to make it juicy. The dish was served with rocket, which I guess was supposed to juxtaposition the sourness of sauces and the saltieness of meat. The result was that it didn’t really come through, as it was all very blend. Even the addition of salt didn’t really help. We didn’t finish it. Then, about the presentation - all of the dishes looked very pleasing, like you’d really love to eat it, so kudos for that! We were also asked by the waiter about everything, we told him that overall it was just fine. I know I might have said everything on the spot and believe me, usually I do, but I was just too tired and wanted to go home and rest, hope I’m not coming through as douche😅. Worth mentioning - we also ordered rose, which complemented the salad and the variety of cheeses very much. At the end we were presented with a complemantairy shots of raki, very nice gesture. Overall experience was just fine. What I would work...
Read moreWe dined at Sourtouko three days ago as a group of six. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, with a touch of old Athens nostalgia that doesn’t feel staged. Service was friendly but slightly stretched at peak time—understandable given the crowd.
The food stands out. The hunkiar beyendi had a rich, well-balanced smokiness, the buffalo soutzoukakia were juicy with just the right amount of spice, and the pork belly with sweet potato purée was properly slow-cooked and flavorful. The grilled liver with lemon-herb sauce was executed well, though a bit on the lighter side for those who like a deeper char.
For sharing, the giant beans in tomato batter with garlic sauce and cheese kataifi pie with tomato marmalade were worth ordering. The peinirli with wine-braised rooster and katiki cheese was a nice touch, though the crust could have been crispier.
The drinks list is solid, featuring a well-chosen mix of small-producer Greek wines,...
Read moreI ate here for the first time in April and for me, Sourtouko is an outstanding restaurant combining greek traditional homemade food with todays modern cuisine; They offer very tasty, fresh and local ingredients for fair prices! These properties make the big difference compared to other places. The friendly service and lovely decorations transmit the feeling of beeing part of a big greek family. This summer I went again on a friday, where a local band was playing traditional greek music- The locals were dancing, spreading out an atmosphere as one hopes to experience when coming to Greece. As a nonlocal, I always feel welcome here with the kindness and hospitalty of the owners, the employees and the guests. Totally recommended! Hint: Check out their schedule online to see...
