Grill Maria — Restaurant in Polygyros Municipality

An authentic Greek restaurant specializing in souvlaki and other grills, offering both inside and outside seating (terrace). It is located in a small mountain village named Agios Prodromos between Thessaloniki and Halkidiki. The town itself is small and very warm to explore by foot. Staff are truly friendly and helpful explaining their menu and suggesting what to try on their menu. Prices are very fair and food portions are generous. We decided to stop by for a lunch after seeing high rating, resulting in a perfect experience. We ordered several items to share on the table and were given free bruschetta to start and also complimentary desert and espresso at the end of our meal. The whole village is full of souvlaki restaurants. This time our choice was Maria’s restaurant. Very friendly stuff , really doing their best to make your meal time great. We had souvlaki, burger and pork shoulder steaks, a Greek salad, chips and soft cheese salad. They offered us bread toasted with olive oil and oregano and at the end an amazing revani ( a sweet cake with sirup) topped with ice cream. Man muss zuallererst betonen, das Agios Prodromos ein Ort ist, der seit Ewigkeiten bekannt für gutes Souvlaki ist. Und es gibt hier 8 Grillrestaurants, die ich bei der nächsten Gelegenheit unbedingt probieren möchte. Ich denke qualitativ gibt daher es wenig Unterschiede, es wird wohl aber kleine Differenzen beim Service geben. Doch wurden wir vom Besitzer schon beim Parken recht freundlich und auf Deutsch hereingewunken deshalb fiel die Entscheidung fürs Erste nicht schwer. Das Souvlaki war erwartungsgemäß das beste was wir in Griechenland bisher gegessen haben. Frisch vom Grill, keine Auftauware, perfekt gewürzt lag es für schlappe 1,20€ pro Spieß auf unseren Tellern, dazu Tsaziki und Patates - chipsförmige Pommes. Es gibt auch die Variante mit Huhn die hier auch sehr gut und saftig schmeckt was meiner Erfahrung nach selten ist, da Hühnchensouvlaki oft zu trocken ist. Während dem Essen auf der gemütlichen Terasse haben wir uns immer wieder mit dem sympathischen Chef, seiner Mutter (?) und einem freundlichen jungen Kellner unterhalten.
