Tuesday morning we called to book a table for 7 (4 adults and 3 kids). Even though we wanted to book for 18:00 we were told that there is nothing available at the front and we have to sit at the back next to the bar and entrance. We told them that we will need the table for maximum 1.5 hour but they insisted that is not possible. We decided to go having read all the positive reviews and the good overall rating of the restaurant.
When we arrived all the tables in the front were empty (you can see from the photos there were more than 20 tables available) but they insisted we couldn't sit there even for just 1.5 hour because everything was reserved.
Since we were seating just by the entrance we witnessed 2 large groups coming (all foreigners) saying they don't have a reservation but magically the owner / manager was able to find a table for them.
Just after we paid and before leaving, out of the 22 tables in front we counted only 5 that were occupied...
Appetisers were decent but all mains a disappointment. We ordered mostly day dishes : seabream, linguine with swordfish, octopus and prawns saganaki. Octopus was inedible (we didn't eat it but they acknowledged it and didn't charged us) and the rest quite blunt and oily.
Prices: premium but didn't match the quality of the food.
Service: excellent (apart from the owner / manager). All waitresses and waiters very polite and kind.
View: great -if you are allowed to get a table in front and see it-
Will we visit again? No.
P.S.1: if you need a table in front and you are a local use your best foreign accent and for the love of God don't mention you have kids.
P.S.2: 19.50€ for a farmed seabream is definitely inappropriate.
P.S.3:At the owner / manager: your staff is very kind and helpful. If you need to make bitter comments about e.g. the way they chew a gum, do it in private. It was embarrassing hearing you shouting at one of your waitresses that she chews like a goat....
Read moreOn a clear mid-May evening, we came with a crescent moon above us and the setting sun out at sea. From our taverna table, we could see them both, as well as the distant hills of the peninsula and the wide open sea. The proprietor greeted us in friendly and fluent English, and the waiters smiled, all confident but not for a moment complacent. Our starters and soft drinks were served to us with quiet panache. The steak tartare was their first triumph, but the smoked mackerel sticks, the hummus, the pita, all held their own and provided much more than mere sustenance. As the sun reached the horizon, and lovers held hands on the beach below, our main courses arrived. The tuna salad was magnificent, but it was the fillet steak that broke the boundaries of past experience and achieved something akin to greatness. The chef must have known he had achieved some feat that day. As the sun disappeared, we finished our meals, and were overcome. After all this, the staff had nothing left to prove. Yet they were magnanimous in victory: we were offered - and accepted - a complimentary gift of a fine baklavaesque cheesecake pudding and two glasses of liqueur to complete proceedings. As we left the taverna, like the Magi shrinking back into the night from witnessing a birth at Bethlehem, we had...
Read moreWe have visited Kefalonia in July 2020 and during our 2nd day on the island we stumbled somehow by mistake on Alaties beach while we were visiting nearby Ierusalim beach.
We were immediately charmed by the small, blue waters beach and the amazing Alati beach bar had a great contribution to that. We spent half day with the hammock in the nearby trees overlooking the water and we had a very tasty lunch.
We normally try a lot of different places while on vacation but this time we returned to Alati for 4 times in 1 week as we really enjoyed the atmosphere, amazingly delicious food and drinks as well as the friendliness of the owner and his family.
We felt like home each time at Alati and we discovered there exactly what we came looking for in Kefalonia - secluded small beaches with relaxed atmosphere.
On our last day we went to Alati one more time for lunch and the owner offered us 2 small jars of home made jam. We thought this was a very nice gesture.
As I mentioned before, food was some of the best we had in Kefalonia, as well as the drinks (wine and cocktails). Prices were a bit above average but they are 100% justified.
We felt extremely sad on our last day at Alati knowing that we will not see this magical place for at...
